Aiken soccer league brings community together at Citizens Park

Jun. 9—AIKEN — Soccer players from across the Aiken area gathered the morning of June 6 at Citizens Park for another weekend of competition in a league that continues to grow both on and off the field.

>With ideal weather, eight teams took part in the Saturday 7v7 soccer league, which drew approximately 200 spectators and participants. The league, now in its second year and third season, welcomed players ranging in age from their late teens to their 60s.

>While the matches provided plenty of excitement, organizers say the league's biggest success is the sense of community it has created.

>Throughout the morning, the atmosphere around Citizens Park reflected that mission. Families lined the sidelines watching games, children played nearby between matches, and teammates laughed and joked with one another as music played across the complex. Players from different backgrounds and skill levels mingled throughout the event, creating an environment that felt just as much like a community gathering as a soccer competition.

>On the field, fans were treated to a series of competitive matchups. Teams exchanged exciting goals, goalkeepers came up with several impressive saves, and many of the contests remained close until the final whistle. After games concluded, players could be seen congratulating opponents and celebrating together, highlighting the sportsmanship that has become a hallmark of the league.

>League organizer John Gordon said the program was established to fill a need in the local soccer community.

>"There was a need for an organized soccer league in Aiken," Gordon said. "With good referees, good fields and good players."

>The league has steadily attracted players looking for a structured environment to play the sport while also building relationships with others who share a love for soccer.

>According to Gordon, the welcoming nature of the league is what separates it from many other recreational sports programs.

>"We include everyone," he said. "Old or young, it doesn't matter. Skilled or not, this league brings people together to have fun."

Veterans of the game shared the field with younger players, while experienced competitors and newcomers alike found opportunities to contribute.
