A’ja Wilson Humbly Dismisses GOAT Shouts: “I Just Wouldn’t Imagine My Name Being on It at This Point of My Career”

But in recent times, the women’s basketball world has even stretched this to Wilson being the greatest of all time, especially because of her recent success. With legends like Lisa Leslie and Candace Parker being compared to her, it’s definitely an honor for Wilson. When asked by ESPN’s Malika Andrews what Wilson thinks about fans and spectators hailing her as the GOAT while she is still active in the WNBA, she humbly dismissed the claim, as she still wants to achieve more in her career. “Crazy, like, it’s crazy,” Wilson said (Timestamp: 0:14) during her sit-down interview in an uploaded clip on Thursday from user @ohnohedidnt24 on X/Twitter. “When people say it, it’s truly crazy ’cause, you know, you think about so many people that have been on this list of GOATs and, I just wouldn’t imagine my name being on it at this point of my career. Like, I’m just like, ‘Uh-uh, I still got so much to do.’ Like, I still got to keep going. I want more. So, when people say it, I’m like, ‘Thanks but, what?'”

Wilson is playing in her ninth WNBA season, all with the Aces. She has led Las Vegas coach Becky Hammon’s team to a 18-8 record, good for second place in the league. Wilson is averaging 26.2 points, 9.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.6 steals and 2.0 blocks in 31.6 minutes per game.

A’ja Wilson non-chalantly embraced being a part of the GOAT WNBA player conversationsLater in her interview with Malika Andrews, A’ja Wilson was asked if she’ll eventually look back at the end of her career and feel within herself that she is indeed the GOAT. While she still humbly discussed it, Wilson eventually embraced her being a part of the GOAT conversations casually. Nevertheless, Wilson is just grateful for the career she has carved out for herself.

“Probably, knowing me. But on the outside of me, I’ll probably be like, ‘Uhh, am I? Still got a lot. I don’t know though,'” Wilson shared (Timestamp: 0:44). “But I love it. The career, the journey that I’ve been on has been so blessed. Like, it’s just been overjoyed with so much love that I receive. It’s been so special. I’m grateful. If I’m the GOAT, cool if I’m there. In my eyes, I’ve been the GOAT since ’96. So, this is just a part of it.”
