The Arizona Cardinals have begun training camp, and competition on the field has begun for roles and spots on the roster. Some players have roster spots locked in and starting jobs secured. Others are on the roster bubble. Others are long shots.
>Some, because of roster moves made in the offseason, are more on notice.
>One player on notice in training camp is running back Trey Benson.
>Benson was a promising third-round pick in 2024 with size and speed. He had the potential to be a No. 1 back. However, injuries have ended two consecutive seasons, and the Cardinals appear to have moved on.
>They signed Tyler Allgeier in free agency, redid James Conner's contract so he can return another year and drafted Jeremiyah Love third overall this year.
>As things stand, he is the No. 4 running back on the roster, a role he is not well equipped for.
>Why?
>If a team is keeping four running backs, the fourth guy must play special teams.
>Benson has played exactly zero special teams snaps in his career.
>In college, he never returned punts and returned only five kickoffs in three years, although he did return one for a touchdown.
>He is not an experienced returner and he doesn't play special teams.
>He will have to become an impact special teamer or someone will either have to get hurt or traded for him to make the roster.
>He potentially could be trade bait, but his injury history and his position make that uncertain, and the Cardinals would be lucky to get a late Day 3 pick for him anyway.
>Unless one of those things happens, it's going to be tough for him to be on the Cardinals' roster in September.
