Aston Martin’s nightmare start to the 2026 F1 season has been well documented. But as the grid heads to the tight, twisting Hungaroring this weekend, the Silverstone-based squad is finally deploying its major counter-offensive: a highly anticipated B-spec chassis overhaul.
>Because the team is essentially rolling out a brand-new car mid-season, Honda F1’s Trackside General Manager, Shintaro Orihara, recently highlighted to the Japanese motorsport press just how critical the opening 60 minutes of practice will be for the garage.
A Fundamentally Different AMR26The upgrades arriving in Budapest aren’t just minor aerodynamic tweaks. Aston Martin has completely re-homologated and crash-tested the forward chassis to shed significant weight. The package includes a new nose, revised rear suspension, and entirely reworked aerodynamic surfaces spearheaded by Adrian Newey’s technical team.
>Because the extent of the overhaul is so massive, calibrating the car’s real-world telemetry against their wind tunnel simulations is the absolute top priority. Furthermore, as Aston Martin Chief Trackside Officer Mike Krack recently admitted to Motorsport.com, the team has been working flat out but is still tight on spare parts.
>This puts intense pressure on the drivers: they have to push the new chassis to its absolute limits to find the optimal setup window, but a single crash could derail the entire weekend. That massive balancing act makes Free Practice 1 (FP1) an incredibly high-stakes session. They simply cannot afford to waste a single minute of track time.
Honda’s Data-Gathering MissionThe pressure of FP1 isn’t solely about validating the new aerodynamics; it directly impacts Honda’s power unit development as well. Speaking in a Hungarian GP preview via Motorsport.jp, Orihara emphasized that FP1 will be an even more important session than usual as they attempt to integrate the hybrid system with the new aero balance.
>While Honda isn’t bringing their massive engine upgrade until the Dutch Grand Prix in late August, the team desperately needs to understand how the new B-spec chassis behaves through Hungary’s medium-speed corners right now. The car’s new aerodynamic grip directly dictates throttle application, which in turn dictates how Honda engineers must map the MGU-K energy harvesting and deployment strategies.
>If Aston Martin and Honda can use FP1 to successfully unlock the baseline setup of the new AMR26, it will set the foundational data required to properly integrate their incoming power unit upgrade when the paddock arrives at Zandvoort after the summer break.
