Astoria girls head basketball coach resigns

Another tough break has hit the Astoria girls basketball program as head coach Jordan Ax has resigned from his position due to medical reasons.

>Ax was hired prior to the 2025-26 school year and was in the process of rebuilding the young Fishermen. This is another blow for the girls basketball team, that will now be on their third coach in as many seasons. Mike Jacobson, head coach since 2014, resigned after the 2023 season. He said it was because of criticism he had received from players and their parents. His replacement, Teke Silva, was let go after just two seasons.

>Now, Ax is stepping down to focus on his health. This will be another setback for a team that was gaining confidence by season’s end.

>Astoria Athletic Director Howard Rub forwarded an email to The Astorian Monday afternoon. He shared his disappointment and best wishes for a return to good health for Ax.

>“Coach Ax did a tremendous job leading our girls program last season,” Rub said. “He worked to build solid relationships with student athletes, parents, boosters, coaches and our administration. We are certainly disappointed that he will not be able to lead our program for the 2026-27 school year, but we are much more concerned that coach Ax can get healthy.”

>In his one season with the Fishermen, Ax had a 5-19 record.

>The Astoria School District will post the job position “in a timely manner,” according to Rub.
