>2023 was peak Matthews; scoring 69 goals is incredibly impressive and probably won’t be done again, but a realistic expectation for him is his 2022 season with 40 goals and 45 assists, finishing with 85 points. He and Gavin McKenna are going to be a fun duo to work with, and their power play should be very fun to watch this season.

>Let’s not forget what Matthews is when he is at his highest level; he is better than just a top-10 center in the league; he makes every defense have to have eyes on him because he scores in so many unique ways.

>The Leafs will need their stars to step up, and they brought in some players, such as a new netminder, Sergei Bobrovsky; Darren Raddysh to help the defense; Jack Roslovic; and some bottom-six help. Matthews will still be the center of attention for their offense, but some help around him will take the stress off of him.

>Matthew Knies had a breakout season and is an important piece of their roster; William Nylander continues to produce at a high level, and despite being older, John Tavares can still put up numbers.

>With a fresh roster comes a shift in expectations, and if the Leafs can maintain their health, a strong performance from Matthews could set the stage for a successful season under new head coach Jim Hiller.
