>The Boston Red Sox are already down several big bats in Roman Anthony and Trevor Story, but they'll be without another key hitter for Wednesday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

>Marcelo Mayer was scratched from Wednesday's starting lineup with back and neck stiffness, according to interim manager Chad Tracy. According to MLB.com's Ian Browne, Tracy said Mayer may be available to pinch-hit, however, if the stiffness clears up in time.

Marcelo Mayer woke up with back and neck stiffness which is why he isn't in the lineup. Chad Tracy hoping it clears in time for a pinch hit at bat.

— Ian Browne (@IanMBrowne) June 10, 2026This is a disappointing update for the Red Sox, who are trying to salvage Wednesday's series finale and avoid getting swept. Mayer has had a strong series so far, homering on Monday and ripping a two-run double on Tuesday after recently tweaking his swing.

>Boston lost both games despite his efforts, however.

>After missing much of last year with injuries, Mayer has been mostly healthy this season, playing in 59 of the Red Sox's 65 games prior to Wednesday. He's struggled at the plate, however, batting just .224/.282/.318 with three homers and 17 RBI.

>Isiah Kiner-Falefa will start at shortstop in his place.
