Chargers' Chris O'Leary faces key decision at cornerback position

The Chargers are set to enter the 2026 season soon after doing nothing but bolster their roster and their coaching staff. While Jim Harbaugh is still at the helm, the Bolts have two new coordinators for their offense and defense.

>On the offensive side, Mike McDaniel will be the shot caller, and there are massive expectations for that side of the ball.

>On defense, following the departure of Jesse Minter, the Chargers handed the reins to Chris O'Leary. O'Leary now takes over as the team's defensive coordinator and inherits a talented group with the potential to develop into one of the NFL's top defenses.

>While the defense has talent, they have a few question marks, including their cornerback room.

>Daniel Popper of The Athletic listed five of his biggest storylines and one of them was the cornerback room. Popper wonders how O'Leary will handle that room considering Minter rotated the cornerbacks last season.

>"O’Leary was asked about rotations at cornerback multiple times during the offseason and was noncommittal. O’Leary said he has done it both ways and sees benefits to both approaches. So we will have to wait for training camp to figure out which way O’Leary is actually leaning."

>Last season, Minter rotated regularly between Donte Jackson, Tarheeb Still, Cam Hart and Benjamin St-Juste. St-Juste is no longer a Charger, but is plenty to be excited about second-year players Nikko Reed and Eric Rogers.

>While it's still unclear how O'Leary will handle that room, training camp will give us a more clear answer to that question.

>Prior to the summer break, O'Leary said he loves where the room stands at the moment.

>"Really good," O'Leary said. "It's one of those where you come in with a mindset or thought of, 'This is what the room looks like, this is who you got.' Then you put in the work and get to this point it's like holy cow.

>"I think it's a healthy competition… I have high hopes for that room."

>The Chargers may not have the star power in that room compared to some of their other position rooms, but they should have continuity and chemistry on their side.
