Charles Barkley Drops Bold Halftime Comment After Victor Wembanyama Humbled by Karl-Anthony Towns

Victor Wembanyama entered the 2026 NBA Finals after silencing many of his critics. He had averaged 27.3 points and 10.8 rebounds while holding Chet Holmgren to just 10.7 points per game in the Western Conference Finals. But Game 2 against the Knicks exposed a different side of Wembanyama, and Charles Barkley had the bluntest take.

Towns hit 42.9 percent of his three-point attempts heading into Game 2, which forced Wembanyama to defend on the perimeter – taking him away from his natural paint-dominating position.

The numbers supported Barkley’s halftime assessment. Wembanyama recovered in the second half and finished with 29 points on 11-of-21 shooting. But his fourth turnover of the night – a miscommunicated outlet pass that hit teammate Stephon Castle in the back – proved fatal. It led directly to Jalen Brunson’s decisive free throw with 9.5 seconds left. Wembanyama then missed a clean 20-foot jumper at the buzzer as the Knicks held on 105-104.

>Barkley was not the only analyst with a strong take. Kendrick Perkins had already declared on ESPN’s First Take that Towns had “exposed” Wembanyama in Game 1 with an 18-point, 12-rebound effort. After Game 2, Towns added 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting and 13 rebounds.

His confidence has a foundation. The Spurs dropped Game 1 to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Semifinals beforewinning that series in six games. Barkley himself acknowledged that the 22-year-old will “own the league soon.” The question is whether Wembanyama can flip the Towns matchup atMadison Square Garden in Game 3 on June 8 before the Spurs face elimination pressure.
