>A planned takeover from a consortium that included former Chelsea and England defender John Terry collapsed at an advanced stage in June.

>It means the club will enter the upcoming League Two season with budget restraints under current owner Robbie Cowling.

>However, according to Cowley, success will be a matter of finding "potential".

>"We definitely have a big challenge ahead of us in terms of recruitment and trying to get a squad together but in every challenge comes opportunity," Cowley told BBC Radio Essex.

>"We have a brilliant academy and some really good young players. In the first two days, we've had as many as 10 of them training with us, which will be brilliant for their development and their progress. Young players, they always surprise you.

>"For us, it's always just trying to see the positive in every situation."

>It is not the first time Colchester have been in this position.

>Cowling has been aiming to sell the U's for the past year after admitting the side required a bigger financial influx.

>In June 2025, advanced takeover talks with US-based Lightwell Sports Group fell through and in February, an investment group that included former AC Milan and Brazil forward Alexandre Pato withdrew from discussions.

>"Sometimes in these situations, you just have to respect the process," Cowley said.

>"We work for Robbie and Robbie has always, since the moment me and Nicky [Cowley, Colchester's assistant manager and Danny's brother] arrived, been incredibly committed and worked exceptionally hard. He always has the club's best interests at heart."

>Cowley confirmed he was included in conversations with Terry's consortium and was anticipating the takeover to go through, but he did have "clarity" over the situation at the club.

>"Naturally, we spent a lot of time with the prospective new owners because we potentially anticipated the takeover to happen but that was no different to the year before," Cowley said.

>"We have a lot of confidence in Robbie. When we've spoken before, he's always said it's got to be the right time with the right people."

>Colchester have made three summer signings, adding defenders Jake Leake and Sean Raggett as well as sealing a new deal for Ellis Iandolo.

>However, they have also seen their fair share of departures after ending last season 12th in League Two.

>"We had a lot of players that did well last year, I think as a consequence of them doing well they attract interest from other clubs," Cowley said.

>"We've got a lot to do. We are still quite skinny in terms of the group so we know what we need to add, we just need to wait for the market to come back to us."

>Finance continues to be an issue and they have already lost one of their top players in midfielder Arthur Read to newly promoted York City.

>"Arthur Read had a brilliant season last year, just look at the numbers and the data, he was right at the top of the division in his position," Cowley added.

>"He got an incredible offer from York. It meant we weren't able to compete.

>"For the clubs with the big finances, they can easily just assess performance and pick the best performers... for us, we have probably got to assess potential."
