The Washington Commanders are one of the oldest franchises in the NFL. They joined the league in 1932 as the sixth team formed after the Chicago Bears, Arizona Cardinals, Green Bay Packers, New York Giants, and Detroit Lions. And while they didn't move far from the D.C. area, they did build a new stadium in 1997 when they moved to Landover, Maryland.

>A recent Sports Illustrated article named the 10 oldest stadiums in the NFL, and Northwest Stadium landed at number eight.

Northwest Stadium has been the home of Washington for nearly three decades. The stadium is located in Landover, Md., but the Commanders are soon planning a return to Washington D.C., where they spent much of the franchise’s history from 1937 to ’96 at Griffith Stadium and then RFK Stadium.

As it stands right now, after Soldier Field is Lambeau Field (1957), Arrowhead Stadium (1972), Caesar's Superdome (1975), Hard Rock Stadium (1987), EverBank Stadium (1995), and Bank of America Stadium (1996) are the seven stadiums that are older than Northwest Stadium.

>However, the Bears are contemplating a move, potentially outside the state of Illinois. If they move, they will leave behind a huge part of their storied franchise history, and Lambeau Field will become the oldest active stadium in the NFL, and Northwest Stadium will become the 7th-oldest active stadium.

>As for the Commanders, they're headed back "home" to Washington, D.C., with the new stadium on the grounds of the old RFK Stadium expected to be completed by 2030. Northwest Stadium, formerly known as FedEx Field, is a place most Washington fans would soon like to forget. New owner Josh Harris has poured millions into the stadium since buying the team in 2023. And while that has helped, it doesn't erase the years of misery in Landover.

>Before moving to Maryland in 1997, Washington played at RFK Stadium for 36 seasons, from 1961 through 1996.
