Cy Falls scores dramatic win over Cy-Fair on 39-yard touchdown with seven seconds left

>The Golden Eagles were out of timeouts. They were facing fourth down with just 15 seconds remaining, and 39 yards of green turf at Pridgeon Stadium stood between them and a 4-0 start to the season.

>But the dire circumstances weren't as dire as they seemed. Not with Karzell Davis.

>The sophomore receiver rescued Cy Falls from the claws of defeat Thursday night, hauling in a 39-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Christian Ndujiuba with seven seconds remaining on the clock. The score gave the Golden Eagles a thrilling 41-38 victory over Cy-Fair in a key District 16-6A battle between a pair of undefeated teams that were both state-ranked entering the showdown.

>Davis, who saw limited action as a freshman last season, further established himself as one of the top young playmakers in the Houston area with a huge performance against the Bobcats. He finished the game with eight catches for 170 yards and two touchdowns, including that game-winner.

>"It was a throw-it-up-and-see-what-happens kind of deal," Cy Falls coach Chris Brister said with a smile as he explained what happened on the decisive touchdown pass. "Luckily, it went our way."

>The victory for the Golden Eagles (4-0, 1-0) was a big one. There's still several games remaining in the regular season, but Cy-Fair and Cy Falls were expected by many to be the district favorites. The Bobcats (3-1, 0-1), who put up more than 400 yards of total offense on Thursday, looked like they might escape with the win after quarterback Sean Riegler zipped a 12-yard touchdown pass to Henry Brooks on fourth down for the 38-35 lead with just 1:18 remaining. But Cy-Fair simply left the Golden Eagles too much time, and Ndujiuba made some key throws to put his team in position for the final strike.

>When it came time to make something happen, Davis and his quarterback put their trust in each other.

>"It's about the culture of your team, and there's no quit in these guys, and there wasn't any quit in the guys on the other side either," Brister said. "I think you build a lot of trust in the offseason, and the guys understand that we've got some people that can make some plays, so we're never out of it."

>Davis proved to be a problem for Cy-Fair all night. He took a jet sweep 66 yards down to the 7-yard line to set up Deron Simpson for the Golden Eagles' first touchdown, and his 31-yard touchdown catch with just 54 seconds to play before halftime knotted the game at 28-28 after Cy-Fair scored on a pick-6.

>Cy Falls was far from perfect against the Bobcats. Turnovers, penalties and some 50-50 plays that didn't break its way threatened to put the team into a 0-1 hole in the district standings. But the Golden Eagles kept battling and did just enough in the fourth quarter to keep their perfect season intact.

>"That crew of the other side - man, both teams just played with a lot of heart at the end of the day," Brister said. "Well-coached on their side, great kids, great program. Somebody was going to win at the end, and it just happened to go our way. But hats off to those guys as well. Really good football team."

>Davis, a 5-foot-11, 170-pound prospect with plenty of speed, gives the Golden Eagles an X-factor on offense. He's built a strong connection with Ndujiuba, and with Simpson - a three-star running back recruit who rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns on Thursday night - in the backfield, Cy Falls has a lot of firepower and has scored at least 32 points in every game so far this season.

>"It's been great," Davis said. "I have great coaches by my side, and I have great teammates."

>Davis still has a long way to go in the recruiting process. But he's already garnered attention from some of the top college football programs in the country. He picked up offers from Alabama, Miami, Oregon and others over the summer and announced an offer from Texas on social media this past Sunday.

>"He is a very good receiver, obviously," Brister said of his young playmaker. "He's extremely talented and a very, very hard-working kid. I'm happy he's on our team, I'll tell you that."

>Moving forward through the rest of the season, Davis and the rest of the Golden Eagles have high expectations. An undefeated regular season and district title are still on the table for Cy Falls, which made a run to the regional semifinals last year before falling to state champion North Shore.

>"There's a lot things we've got to get better at," Brister said. "The film will tell us that. It's obviously good to get a big win going into district play, but we'll look at the film and see where we were good and where we were bad. We'll work on the bad and keep trying to get better at the good."
