Dodgers Insider Names Position Team Must Address at Trade Deadline

The MLB Trade Deadline is less than two weeks away, and while the Los Angeles Dodgers look like the team to beat, they could still add some players to the mix.

class="wp-block-paragraph">The Dodgers don’t have dire needs; in fact, they arguably are the most complete team in baseball, from top to bottom, especially when it comes to veteran talent.

class="wp-block-paragraph">They spend and spend big in free agency with the purpose of contending without needing to rely on the trade deadline to make a game-changing move.

class="wp-block-paragraph">However, especially when it comes to moves on the margins, the Dodgers do not shy away from striking a deal or upgrading on the margins.

Could the Dodgers trade for a catcher?During an appearance on MLB Network, Dodgers reporter and presenter Kirsten Watson highlighted catcher as a position that the Dodgers could look to add in, especially with all of the questions around Will Smith’s neck.

class="wp-block-paragraph">“I’m gonna say a catcher. They need to add a catcher. We saw Ben Rortvedt. He joined the team last year and was huge,” Watson said.

class="wp-block-paragraph">“Just had some experience but stepped in and worked with the rotation really well. So he is someone. It’d be nice to see him come back. He’s currently at AAA with the Mets. So he’s right here. Maybe we see something this weekend happen. That would be a good one.

class="wp-block-paragraph">“Or you could see someone who’s a rental. Someone like a Jonah Heim from the A’s. It’s someone who has postseason experience, and you have someone who can step in. Especially as there’s so much unknown around Will Smith right now with that neck injury.”

The issue with trading for a catcher is the indefinite status of Smith, who may come back in August, September, or October, possibly even missing the whole season.

class="wp-block-paragraph">If it is only an absence that is a matter of weeks or days rather than months, then the Dodgers can thrive with Dalton Rushing and Elizer Alfonzo Jr.

class="wp-block-paragraph">On the other hand, if his season is truly in jeopardy, a trade for someone like Rortvedt and Heim becomes imperative, just to cover themselves if Rushing goes down or to upgrade his backup.
