Brendan Sorsby looks to throw during the Texas Tech football team's spring game © Imagn ImagesTexas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Brendan Sorsby was granted an injunction by a judge in Texas on Monday. He is now allowed to play for the Red Raiders in the 2026 season and won’t enter the NFL supplemental draft.
>Sorsby was deemed ineligible for college football by the NCAA after it was discovered that he had bet around $90,000 on college and pro sports over the last four years. He had also placed bets on the Indiana Hoosiers’ games during his freshman year at that school.
>After the NCAA declared him ineligible, many thought that Sorsby would enter the NFL through the supplemental draft. However, Sorsby decided to hire lawyer Jeffrey Kessler to fight his case against the NCAA. Kessler has had a brilliant track record in cases against the NCAA.
>Insiders and experts believe that Sorsby being eligible for another season in college football will have an adverse effect. On “The Pat McAfee Show,” ESPN’s Mike Greenberg discussed what the development could mean for college sports’ future.
>“We have entered a really, really complicated place,” he said.
Greenberg said that he has a personal history with sports gambling. When he started hosting talk shows in Chicago, one of the things he campaigned for was the legalization of sports gambling.
>His idea was that since gambling was already prevalent, it was better to give it a legal structure and make it taxable.
>“With the direct connections that sports teams have with these (apps and prediction markets) … comes what is obviously a very slippery slope because it is very difficult … out of one side of your mouth to say you must stay away from this, this is the worst thing you could possibly do, and on the other side, say make sure you check out the parlay that we have right now available for new customers only,” he said.
>Greenberg believes that the sports world is in a complicated situation with the involvement of sports gambling and the prevention of athletes from engaging in the activity.
Pete Thamel on the Impact of Brendan Sorsby’s CaseESPN’s Pete Thamel also discussed the reactions he has seen in the world of college football on Pat McAfee’s show.
>“This is certainly an unprecedented day in the history of college sports,” Thamel said. “And I don’t want to sound overdramatic here, but gambling has always been a thick red line and … Brendan Sorsby, who admitted to placing thousands of bets for $90,000, including 40 bets on his own team (Indiana).”
“The fact that he has been legally cleared to play college football this season at Texas Tech is simply something that we’ve never seen before.”
>Thamel revealed that a Big 12 athletic director texted him after the ruling and said, “We’ve lost our soul today.” Thamel said that gambling always carried significant consequences for athletes, but now we’ll see an athlete who admitted to gambling play for a program next season.
