The expectations surrounding rookie edge defender David Bailey continue to grow, and honestly, it’s easy to understand why.
>Bailey was the second player taken in the most recent NFL Draft. The New York Jets seemingly struck oil with the acquisition of the 2025 Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year, one who was also named a Unanimous All-American.
>ESPN’s Mike Clay recently released his projections for rookie leaders across 10 major statistical categories, and when it came to sacks, the New York Jets rookie edge rusher sat at the top of the list. Clay projects Bailey to lead all rookies with 7.6 sacks in 2026. That number may not leap off the page compared to elite veteran production, but context matters. Clay also noted that rookie sack production has dipped recently.
"James Pearce Jr. led the way with 10.5 sacks last season, but no other rookie had more than 5.5, and only two others reached 5.0 (Jalon Walker and Nic Scourton). Micah Parsons' 13.0 sacks in 2021 was the most by a rookie over the past decade, and only five other freshmen (including Pearce) reached double-digits. Four of the five were first-rounders. (Maxx Crosby was a fourth-rounder in 2019.)"
That’s a great explanation, one that makes Bailey’s projection extremely notable. Clay also pointed out that five edge rushers were selected in the first round this year. That means opportunities, reps, and production will be split among several talented pass rushers. Even so, Bailey still landed atop the list. That shouldn’t surprise Jets fans.
Much is expected of David Bailey's first season, and for good reasonNew York made Bailey the No. 2 overall pick for a reason. He wasn’t simply the first defensive player selected because of upside alone. The expectation was always that he’d make an immediate impact. And if Clay’s forecast proves accurate, Bailey won’t just be productive. He’ll immediately enter Defensive Rookie of the Year territory. It seems to be a conversation that is already happening.
>Bailey currently holds the shortest odds to win the award, and projections like this only strengthen the argument. Edge rushers who pile up sacks naturally generate headlines, and if Bailey approaches eight sacks while flashing consistently in a major market, the attention will come quickly. Of course, projections are projections, but this one feels less like wishful thinking and more like a fairly logical expectation.
>The Jets drafted Bailey to disrupt quarterbacks immediately. ESPN clearly believes that’s exactly what he’ll do. Many pundits, fans, and media members agree, and it isn't just those who are residing in Florham Park or surrounding areas that Jets fans are known to congregate.
