Switzerland win a World Cup knockout game for the first time in 88 years! Nati are through to the last 16 for the fourth finals running, after a generally routine 2-0 victory over Algeria. The latter enjoyed more possession in Vancouver (56%), but the superiority of Switzerland's attacking play was highlighted by their xG of 2.52 compared to their opponents' 0.73. Murat Yakin's side broke the deadlock in the 10th minute as Johan Manzambi embarked on a fine individual run, before putting the ball on a plate for Breel Embolo to tuck into an empty net. It was 2-0 within 48 seconds of the second half, as a cross was only cleared as far as Dan Ndoye, who swept home what proved to be the game-clinching second goal. Substitute Fabian Rieder provided arguably the miss of the tournament when he failed to slot into an open goal later on. Nevertheless, the damage was already done, and Switzerland can look forward to returning to Vancouver on Tuesday, when they'll face Colombia or Ghana in the round of 16. As for Algeria, their wait for that maiden victory in a World Cup knockout game will continue for another four years at the very least. After winning two of their first three matches at the finals on debut in 1982, the Fennecs have won just two of their 14 since. That's all for today. Thanks for joining us. Until next time, goodbye!
>SAVE! Switzerland look to finish with a flourish at the other end. The ball breaks kindly for the onrushing Freuler, who connects cleanly with his low drive. Yet it's straight at Zidane.
>If Algeria were about to build towards an attack, their efforts are stopped in their tracks following Boulbina's foul throw. That does just sum up their day!
>Boulbina looks to skip inside and get a shot away for Algeria, but his efforts are charged down by the Swiss defence. Ait-Nouri is then penalised as he attempts to win the ball back high up the field. That will suit Switzerland, who won't be in a rush to resume play.
>Up goes the fourth official's board, and we will play a further six minutes at the end of this second half. There's still time for Algeria – look at Belgium's late surge against Senegal on Wednesday. However, it seems highly unlikely they will repeat those exploits.
