Bruce Arians spent only four seasons as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but Lavonte David believes his arrival completely changed the direction of the franchise.

>During an appearance with Jim Rome, the former Buccaneers linebacker praised Arians for the honesty and accountability he brought to Tampa Bay. David said the team became more disciplined after Arians took over and credited him with helping turn around a franchise that had struggled to win consistently.

>“He was that guy,” David said. “When he came in, we turned ourselves around and became one of the most disciplined teams around.”

— Jim Rome (@jimrome) July 15, 2026What stood out most to David was how real Arians kept everything with his players. When Tampa Bay changed coaching staffs, David initially believed he might have to continue his career elsewhere. Arians quickly put those concerns to rest by telling the veteran linebacker that he wanted to build the defense around him.

>That conversation helped convince David to remain with the only franchise he had ever played for. It also showed him that Arians understood the importance of keeping one of Tampa Bay’s defensive leaders in place while reshaping the rest of the roster.

>David also recalled Arians wanting the Buccaneers to eliminate the unnecessary mistakes that had cost them games. He said Tampa Bay had lost nine games because of what he called dumb mistakes, and Arians made cleaning up those problems one of his first priorities.

>The approach eventually helped Tampa Bay become a legitimate contender. Arians led the Buccaneers to a Super Bowl championship following the 2020 season, with David serving as one of the central pieces of a defense that played its best football during the postseason.

>For David, Arians’ impact went beyond the championship. His willingness to speak honestly, to trust veteran players, and to demand more discipline helped create the culture that changed the Buccaneers’ trajectory.
