Novak Djokovic lost from two sets up to exit the French Open against teenager Joao Fonseca in an extraordinary upset, which means a new men’s grand slam champion will be crowned in Paris this fortnight.

>Following the shock exit of favourite Jannik Sinner and with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz absent due to injury, the 39-year-old Djokovic faced a golden opportunity to win a record 25th grand slam title with his two biggest rivals removed from his path – but fell to a rising star who may have designs on a breakthrough success.

>There will also be a new winner in the women’s draw, with defending champion Coco Gauff and four-time Roland-Garros winner Iga Swiatek among those to depart, leaving last year’s runner-up Aryna Sabalenka and a rejuvenated Elina Svitolina, who recently won her biggest title in eight years on the clay in Rome, as leading contenders.
