Golf Channel cancels 'Big Break' reboot amid Good Good controversy

Golf Channel has canceled its Big Break reboot in conjunction with Good Good Golf.

>Good Good has been enveloped in controversy since August 21 when it posted an advertisement for its new driver collaboration with Callaway that depicted Good Good's Garrett Clark shoving a woman to the ground. The video drew widespread backlash from golf fans and social media at large, prompting Golf Galaxy, among other stores, to pull the brand's merchandise from its retail platforms. Callaway also cut ties with Good Good on Thursday morning.

When Golf Galaxy requested its branding be removed from the show, Golf Channel initially postponed the airing of the first episode until Sept. 1, but now, the season has been axed altogether after the PGA Tour announced Good Good decided to withdraw its title sponsorship of a new FedEx Cup Fall event in November, which was set to serve as the culmination of the Big Break reboot.

>Throughout the show’s history, Big Break has awarded aspiring professional golfers exemptions into select events on tours across professional golf. The winner of Big Break x Good Good would have earned a spot in the PGA Tour's Good Good Championship scheduled for Nov. 12-15 at Omni Barton Creek Resort in Austin, Texas, which, as of Thursday afternoon, is now listed as simply the Austin Championship on the Tour's official schedule.

>PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp said during a news conference Tuesday at the Tour Championship that the Good Good advertisement skit for the Callaway driver was "concerning" and that Good Good's initial response to the backlash was "disappointing." Good Good first issued a short statement on the matter Saturday, then Clark posted a nearly 9-minute video Wednesday night apologizing for the ad.

>Golf Channel still plans to bring back Big Break next year, the network said in a statement issued just after 6 p.m. ET on Thursday: “Following recent developments involving Good Good, and including the fact that the intended outcome of the series can no longer be fulfilled, Golf Channel will not be able to complete this season of Big Break as planned. While we are disappointed for the 12 competitors, our production team that worked tirelessly on the season, and the show’s passionate fans, we look forward to Big Break’s return to Golf Channel in 2027.”

>Dating back to its debut in 2003, Big Break pits highly-skilled golfers against each other in a variety of skills challenges from tee-to-green, including two of the show's signature challenges ― the “Glass Break” and the “Flop Wall” ― which were set to return for Big Break x Good Good. The last season of the show aired in 2015.
