Is Fernando Alonso Actually Going to Attempt the Triple Crown Again? Jenson Button Thinks So

If there is one thing we know about Fernando Alonso, it’s that the man is absolutely addicted to racing. But is he addicted enough to risk everything for another shot at the elusive Triple Crown?

>His former McLaren teammate Jenson Button certainly thinks so.

>As highlighted by F1 commentator @Nachez98 in a recent X post, Button was recently asked about Alonso’s chances of completing motorsport’s ultimate holy trinity: winning the Monaco Grand Prix, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the Indianapolis 500.

Alonso Has The Best Chance in the WorldCurrently, Graham Hill is the only driver in the entire history of motorsport to actually pull it off. But according to Button, Alonso is the only modern driver capable of joining that exclusive club.

>“Fernando is probably the one with the best chance of completing the Triple Crown, having won Monaco and Le Mans, and coming close in Indianapolis, where he led the race,” Button explained. “If he wants to try again, he undoubtedly has a shot at it.”

>And honestly? Button isn’t wrong. Alonso took the IndyCar world completely by storm during his rookie attempt back in 2017, qualifying on the second row and leading 27 laps before his Honda engine tragically exploded. If that engine held on, we might not even be having this conversation.

The Danger and The DakarBut here is where reality hits the wall. Does Alonso even want to go back to the Brickyard?

>The short answer seems to be no. As Nachez pointed out, Alonso explicitly shut down the idea of an Indy return back in May 2023, citing the massive amount of dedicated preparation required and the extreme, life-threatening danger of oval racing. When you are pushing 45 years old and already have two F1 World Championships and two Le Mans trophies on your mantle, do you really need to risk it all going 230 mph an inch away from a concrete wall?

He recently stated that the only external challenge that truly excites him now is winning the grueling Dakar Rally.

>While it’s a massive shame for motorsport fans who desperately want to see him complete the Triple Crown, it completely makes sense. Let’s just hope his new Aston Martin F1 contract keeps him entertained enough in the meantime.
