Europe’s Luke Donald won’t be the only Ryder Cup captain hoping the third time is the charm. Golfweek has learned Jim Furyk will be named as the 2027 U.S. Ryder Cup captain later this week.
>Furyk, 55, served in that role in 2018 in France, where the U.S. team lost to Europe. He also was the winning U.S. captain at the 2024 Presidents Cup in Montreal, so this will be his third go as captain of a U.S. squad in a major team event. The U.S. last won the Ryder Cup on European soil in 1993. Team USA previously went back to the well with Davis Love III, who was the losing captain in 2012 at Medinah as Europe rallied from a 10-6 deficit to win 15-13 but earned redemption four years later with a resounding victory at Hazeltine by the score of 17-11.

>In the aftermath of being on the winning side in 2024, Furyk told Golfweek, “I think I was a lot more prepared this year than I was in '18. I think the experience in '18 and knowing that I could have done a few things better, I think, really helped."
>A 17-time PGA Tour winner, including the 2003 U.S. Open, Furyk played in nine consecutive Ryder Cups (1997–2014) and was appointed as a vice captain for the 2016, 2021, 2023 and 2025 matches.
>Furyk has played infrequently on PGA Tour Champions while dealing with injuries and this season has worked as an analyst for Golf Channel during Florida Swing events at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and Players Championship. He tested the waters again as part of the “Live From the Masters” team.
>Two years ago, when Furyk was asked whether he’d like to be a captain again, he said, “You know what, I'm not going to answer that question.”
>It appears the answer is a resounding yes.
>For the second straight go-round, Tiger Woods bowed out of the running to be U.S. captain. In 2025, he said he was too busy with his job as a member of the Tour Policy Board. The PGA tried to go younger with Keegan Bradley, who was the youngest captain since Arnold Palmer more than 50 years ago. Bradley, who the Travelers Championship and was ranked inside the top 10 in the world for a portion of the year, eventually decided not to be a playing captain. The U.S. fell behind at Bethpage 11.5-4.5 heading into the Singles Session and nearly pulled off a stunning comeback before losing 15-13.
>On April 1, Woods announced he was taking himself out of consideration for the position after being involved in a car accident and heading into a 90-day intensive inpatient rehabilitation program in Zurich, Switzerland, following his DUI arrest in late March.
>U.S. Presidents Cup captain Brandt Snedeker hasn’t named his assistants for the biennial competition that will be held in late September in Chicago, but in an interview with Golfweek he said that he planned to name the U.S. Ryder Cup captain to his back room.
>Donald was named Europe’s captain for a third straight term on March 4, and will aim to become the first European captain to lead his team to three straight Ryder Cup wins.
>The 2027 competition will be held at Adare Manor in Limerick, Ireland.
