The New York Mets have been one of the biggest disappointments in MLB this season, but perhaps there is finally a small reason for optimism. After entering 2026 with legitimate World Series expectations, the Mets have instead found themselves buried in last place in the National League East.
>Injuries, inconsistent play, and organizational turmoil have all contributed to a season that has gone off the rails. Now, an unexpected comment from Juan Soto may offer a glimpse of hope for the future.

Both Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor have spent time on the injured list, while several other key players have also missed significant time. Although injuries have certainly hurt the club, they’re far from the only reason New York has struggled.
>The Mets parted ways with manager Carlos Mendoza in June, and rumors continue to swirl regarding the future of President of Baseball Operations David Stearns as frustration mounts throughout the organization.
>Another storyline that has lingered throughout the season has been the reported relationship between the club’s two biggest stars.
Soto’s Honest—and Hilarious—AnswerJun 3, 2025; Los Angeles, California, USA; New York Mets outfielder Juan Soto (22) reacts with shortstop Francisco Lindor (12) after hitting a two run home run against the Los Angeles Dodgers during the third inning at Dodger Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn ImagesFor much of the year, there has been speculation that Soto and Lindor haven’t developed much chemistry, leading many to wonder whether that dynamic has impacted the clubhouse. When Soto was recently asked about his relationship with Lindor, however, he delivered an answer few expected.
>According to a report, Soto said: “Definitely, our relationship is getting better because it takes time. When you meet a girl, you don’t start kissing her right away.”
>The response immediately grabbed attention for its humor, but it also carried a meaningful message.
A Positive Sign for the FutureWhile the Mets’ postseason hopes are all but gone, improving chemistry between Soto and Lindor could be one of the most important developments of the season. Both players are expected to remain the foundation of the franchise moving forward. If they can build a stronger relationship on and off the field, it will give the organization something positive to build around heading into 2027.
>Winning clubs are often led by superstar players who trust one another, and it appears Soto believes that trust is beginning to develop.
>The Mets still have plenty of questions to answer this offseason, from the front office to the roster itself. But if Soto’s comments are any indication, perhaps the relationship between New York’s two biggest stars is finally moving in the right direction—and that could be one of the few bright spots in an otherwise disappointing season.
