>The New York Knicks are World Champions! The Knicks have defeated the Spurs 94-90, winning the NBA Finals in 5 games. The 53-year wait is over! While celebrations in New York City are likely exceeding the wildest expectations, Spike Lee predicted this. "If we win this championship, it better be on the road," Lee said before the Finals.
>This game was not the dominant affair from start to finish that New York fans might have wanted in their coronation moment. However, it was indicative of how these Knicks have won games on their way to their first title since 1973. The Knicks, better than any other team in these playoffs can score in volume. They've also battled back in many games leading to this point.
>The Knicks were scappy and gritty. Never completely out of almost any game. The Knicks were the one team that cannot be counted out until the game clock reads 0:00. This game personified that notion. The Spurs led this game from 6-5 all the way until 83-81. Or about the 4:14 mark of the 4th quarter.
>Statistically this was the game from Jalen Brunson that even Jalen himself was waiting for. He had not been pleased with his first four games in this series. 45 points on 51.9% shooting from the floor, three rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a critical +10 in the plus/minus category.
>Statistically, no one outside of Brunson had a banner game. Victor Wembanyama who held the game leading stat line for most of the game had 19/14 but a -3 plus/minus. Much more aggressive early on, Wemby fizzled late in the game.
The Knicks team stats were not dominant. Less FG%, same 3p%, slightly better FT%. The Knicks won the rebounding edge, steals and points off turnovers. The Spurs won assists, blocks, total turnovers, and committed one more foul than New York. Stats alone did not win this game. Situational basketball and the awareness of the Knicks star player Jalen Brunson won this gameThe only remaining question for Knicks fans, after the significant celebration that is about to ensue, is Championship Parade plans. Enjoy yourselves NYC. This one was a long time coming and well earned.
