Lazaro Montes drills deep home run in MLB debut to help power Mariners past Red Sox

style="text-align: left;">Montes, after being called up by the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday, opened his MLB career with an RBI and then a deep home run to straightaway center in the fifth inning of their 9-6 win over the Boston Red Sox.

style="text-align: left;">As a result, Montes is now the first Mariners player with multiple hits in his MLB debut since Ichiro Suzuki’s start with the franchise back in 2001, via MLB.com. He’s one of just six players in franchise history with a homer in his debut, too.

style="text-align: left;">The Mariners brought Montes up on Tuesday when rosters expanded for the final stretch of the season, and threw him into their starting lineup as their designated hitter in Boston. He was the team’s No. 5 prospect, and had racked up 38 home runs and 96 RBI combined between stints with their Triple-A and Double-A affiliates.

“I can't describe how I feel in this moment right now, but I feel like I made it,” Montes said before the game, via MLB.com.

The Mariners jumped to a 6-1 lead in just the second inning, thanks in part to an early solo shot from Dominic Canzone and then a three-run homer from Randy Arozarena. While the Red Sox managed a few runs after Montes’ home run, including a pair in the ninth after a home run from Jahmai Jones, the comeback started too late.

style="text-align: left;">The win snapped a five-game losing skid for the Mariners. They now sit at 65-74 on the year, which has them in third in the AL West race. They are running out of time to climb into the final wild card spot in the American League, too, and entered Tuesday six games back from the Cleveland Guardians.
