Liverpool are right to make ruthless Arne Slot call but his legacy should not be rewritten

>It is a judgement call on the club’s trajectory. If the internal review suggested things had stalled, the decision can be justified.

>The timing is still severe. Removing a head coach with Slot’s record piles pressure on those responsible for the next appointment.

>But that is the price Liverpool have chosen to pay. Once a club makes this kind of call, it has to be right about what comes next.

Arne Slot still leaves Liverpool as a successful managerThe biggest mistake now would be to rewrite Slot’s time at Liverpool because of the way it ended.

>He joined the club in June 2024 and delivered Liverpool’s 20th league title in his first season.

>That alone secures his place in the club’s modern history. Liverpool had waited a long time for that milestone, and Slot delivered it immediately after succeeding Jurgen Klopp.

>He was also named LMA Manager of the Year, while Liverpool reached the Carabao Cup final and the last 16 of the Champions League during the same campaign.

>Those are not the achievements of a failed appointment. They are the record of a manager who followed an era-defining figure and still made Liverpool champions.

>That has to remain the starting point for any fair judgement of his spell.

The problem was trajectory, not legacyThe more persuasive reading is that Liverpool have acted because of trajectory rather than legacy.

>The club said their conclusion was built on a belief that the team’s trajectory is best addressed through a change of direction.

>That is the central line in the statement. Liverpool did not attack Slot’s ability, dismiss his achievements, or frame the last two years as a mistake.

>They also noted that he oversaw Champions League qualification for a second successive season and reached the quarter-finals of the competition in 2025-26.

>At the same time, The Athletic reported Liverpool finished fifth with 60 points, which gives the club’s decision a clear performance backdrop.

>That is why both things can be true. Liverpool can be right to demand more, and Slot can still leave as a successful Liverpool manager.

>The danger is letting the shock of the decision flatten the full picture. Slot’s reign ended abruptly, but it did not end empty.

>Liverpool have made a ruthless call because they believe the next phase needs different leadership. The next head coach will inherit not just a squad, but the burden of proving that removing a title-winning manager was worth it.

>Slot leaves with a league title, respect from the club’s own statement and a legacy that should remain intact. Liverpool may be right to move on, but they should not let the end distort what came before.
