Liverpool have taken a step closer to a Premier League signing. Though, it isn’t straightforward.

Tottenham Hotspur are going to have to make changes this summer, no matter what division they're playing in. Spurs could legitimately be relegated if things go a certain way - they finally dropped into the bottom three at the weekend.

It means plenty of their players will be up for grabs. Perhaps that's because they've been relegated and everyone must depart. Or maybe it's because they were nearly relegated and Spurs would like a new team.

Either way, Liverpool can take advantage of that situation. Spurs do have some talented players, after all, and they'd be capable of doing a job at Anfield, even mostly as squad depth.

One of those is Micky van de Ven, who the Mail linked to Liverpool earlier this year. It certainly appears that he's up for grabs regardless of Spurs' fate given the Athletic reports their 'advanced' talks with Marcos Senesi.

Spurs, it seems, are in the middle of reshaping their defence and that opens the door for Van de Ven to depart. Liverpool have a chance, then, and Senesi's apparent desire to move to North London pushes the Reds one step closer to a move.

Now, there's a long way to go and ultimately, we hope Liverpool can do better than Van de Ven. But all the uncertainty around centre-back means someone surely arrives.

And that may well be Van de Ven.

Micky van de Ven: Situation Summary

Current Form and Relegation Battle

As of 17 April 2026, Micky van de Ven is enduring a turbulent season at Tottenham Hotspur, where the club finds itself in the midst of a historic Premier League relegation battle. Despite Spurs being the only top-flight side without a league win in 2026—a run of 14 games—the 24-year-old remains a statistical standout. He has made 38 appearances across all competitions, netting six goals, including two in the Champions League. However, he has faced public criticism from former defender Toby Alderweireld for inconsistent performances during this winless streak. Now acting as vice-captain, Van de Ven recently admitted concern over the squad's ability to adapt to new manager Roberto De Zerbi’s tactics in time to secure survival.

Transfer Speculation and Contract Refusal

Van de Ven’s future in North London is increasingly uncertain following reports on 15 April that he has turned down a new five-year contract offer. With Tottenham sitting 18th in the table and just six games remaining, the Dutch international has reportedly had his head turned by significant interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona. Spurs have slapped a £100 million valuation on the defender to reflect his importance and current contract length, but his desire to play Champions League football next season may force the club’s hand. For now, he remains focused on the international stage, having been a regular for the Netherlands during their successful 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
