Emma Soccodato will probably be a little less mobile as an assistant coach. | Credit: Marquette University If you’ve been paying attention to the Marquette women’s lacrosse Instagram in June, you may have noticed that head coach Meredith Black has been bidding farewell to her staff. First it was Annie Carroll back on June 2nd, then it was Chrissy Thomas on June 26th. Carroll had been with the Golden Eagles for two seasons, while Thomas walked off campus at Maryland in May of 2025 straight into her first coaching gig for this past spring season.

class="wp-block-paragraph">So, yeah, new hires were bound to drop any second now, and on Thursday, we got the first one. Meredith Black has hired a familiar face in Emma Soccodato to join her staff as an assistant coach. This will be her first coaching job at the Division 1 level.

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Emma back home to our coaching staff,” Black said. “As a former two-time captain and standout player, she perfectly embodies what it means to lead this program. What truly sets Emma apart is her unmatched energy. She brings an infectious enthusiasm and positive attitude to every single situation. She bleeds blue and gold through and through, and I have no doubt her passion and leadership will make her an amazing addition to our team.”

Just so we’re all on the same page here: This is Emma, not her sister Cate, who is #10 on Marquette’s all time points list and #3 on the all time assists list. Emma still had a heck of a career for the Golden Eagles, earning all-Big East honors in 2022 (Second Team) and 2023 (First Team), and still ranks #9 in career draw controls.

class="wp-block-paragraph">I did say this is Soccodato’s first Division 1 coaching job, which implies that it’s not her first coaching job. That’s accurate, as she spent this past season as the girls’ lacrosse head coach at West Bend High School. Soccodato guided the program to their first ever winning season in her one year in charge, so it seems like she might just have a good idea as to what she’s talking about when it comes to coaching instead of playing.

class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s an interesting spot for Soccodato to drop back into the program, as the seniors that just finished their careers in 2026 were the freshmen on the roster when she finished her career in 2023. The 2027 seniors are the first class to have not played with Soccodato, so there’s just enough of a gap for them to perhaps remember her as a player on the roster when they were being recruited but not enough to have become familiar with her as a teammate.

class="wp-block-paragraph">Meredith Black still has one staff spot remaining, presuming that she is going to fill both of the spots left by Carroll and Thomas. Devon Ortman is still listed on the staff as an assistant coach after transferring in to Marquette in 2025 but never getting on the field and shifting to a coaching position. It would seem to make sense that Black might want a more experienced voice in her locker room, but she hasn’t been shy about going young with her assistants over and over again for the past few years, so we’ll see what happens….
