Michigan basketball retains key staff for new season

When Dusty May left Ann Arbor for the NBA, there were massive questions about the future of the program and who would remain with Michigan basketball.

>The Wolverines elevated assistant Mike Boynton Jr., who had been a head coach at Oklahoma State for several years, to head coach on a two-year deal. But Justin Joyner had already left for Oregon State's head coaching job, and May stole away assistants Drew Williamson and Mody Maor. Thus, the pool of assistants was thinning, with no indication of who would remain with the maize and blue.

>On Tuesday, it was revealed the director of basketball operations KT Harrell is being elevated to assistant level, while Kyle Church, Akeem Miskdeen, strength coach Matt Aldred, director of analytics Jacob Kohn, and special assistant Brandon Gilbert are all staying in Ann Arbor for the forthcoming season.

— Clayton Sayfie (@CSayf23) July 21, 2026Keeping Church (also the director of recruiting) and Miskdeen is huge for the maize and blue, in particular, as is retaining Aldred. Church had been with May since his time at FAU, and it was widely thought he very well would follow him to the NBA. But it appears that only two assistants followed, with Maor having not yet even coached a game in Ann Arbor.
