NFL suspends Arizona Cardinals executive Ryan Gold. What did he do?

Another sports betting scandal has emerged. This time, it stems from the actions of an NFL front office executive.

>The NFL has suspended Arizona Cardinals director of college football scouting Ryan Gold for violating the league's gambling policy. The news was initially reported by Rob Maaddi of the Associated Press on July 17. The NFL confirmed the suspension a few minutes later.

>The league said in a statement that an investigation revealed that Gold had "participated in parlay bets on NFL and college games." In addition, the NFL found that the Cardinals executive leaked information about his team's decision-making during the draft in April.

>"The League’s investigation determined that Gold provided confidential, non-public inside information regarding 2026 Draft selections by the Cardinals before they were announced," the NFL wrote in its statement, via ESPN's Adam Schefter.

>Gold's suspension is indefinite and effective immediately, according to the league's statement. He will have the right to appeal his suspension.

>"Although there is no reason to believe the integrity of any NFL game was affected, the League takes any violation of the Gambling Policy with the utmost seriousness," the statement reads.

>The NFL did not state what non-public information Gold disclosed that led to his suspension – only that the information was related to the 2026 draft.

>Gold was in his 13th season with the Cardinals and was promoted to his current position as director of college football scouting in June 2025. Previously, he served as a college scouting coordinator with the team from 2018 to 2021 and then as their assistant director of college scouting from 2022 to 2024.

>The Cardinals released their own statement supporting the NFL's decision.

>"The NFL's policies and expectations for all employees are clear, comprehensive, and consistently communicated," the team's statement reads, per Maaddi. "We fully support the league's decision in this matter, which involves a single employee. Our focus remains on preparing for the start of training camp next week and the 2026 season."

>The Cardinals selected Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. He was the first of seven total picks Arizona made in April.
