Norrie into Los Cabos quarter-finals as Osaka advances in Washington

>Cameron Norrie continued his return to form at the Los Cabos Open by beating James Duckworth in straight sets to reach the quarter-finals.

>Norrie had lost six successive matches across clay and grass before starting his summer hard-court campaign with victory over Aleksandar Kovacevic on Monday night.

>The British No 2 backed up that performance with a 6-4 6-4 win over Duckworth on Wednesday evening to set up a last-eight clash with another Australian, Bernard Tomic.

>Norrie lost his first service game of the match to fall 2-0 down, but would then claim two successive breaks of serve himself to take a 4-3 lead, before routinely closing the set out with a couple of holds.

>The 30-year-old looked to be cruising to victory when he went up a double break in the second set to lead 5-2, but had to survive a brief wobble before getting over the line.

>Norrie was broken in his first attempt to serve out the contest, and then needed three match points to finish the job, eventually closing out the win in just over 90 minutes.

>Norrie, seeded fifth, is the second highest ranked player still in the draw after upsets saw top seed Jiri Lehecka beaten by Hong Kong's Coleman Wong, and Tomic overcome fourth seed Karen Khachanov.

>Naomi Osaka maintained her strong form by advancing to the last eight of the Mubadala DC Open after opponent Ashlyn Krueger retired through injury while trailing 6-3 3-1.

>Krueger took a timeout during the first set to receive treatment on her right ankle, but appeared to become more hampered by the injury as the match went on.

>The result puts Osaka, who is returning to action for the first time since Wimbledon, through to the quarter-finals for a third successive tournament.

>Osaka, who is seeded third, will face Italy's Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the last eight.

>In the men's draw, Spanish teenager Rafael Jodar beat former champion Kei Nishikori to set up an exciting quarter-final clash with fourth seed Lorenzo Musetti.

>On Thursday, all eyes will be on an all-Australian clash on the main stadium court as top seed Alex de Minaur takes on qualifier Cruz Hewitt, the 17-year-old son of former world No 1 Lleyton Hewitt.

>Making his ATP Tour main singles draw debut, Hewitt beat fellow qualifier Marcos Giron in straight sets to set up a meeting with defending champion De Minaur.
