NSL Week 9 Recap: Identical scorelines all round as league competitiveness rises

class="wp-block-paragraph">If there was ever a week that perfectly captured the competitiveness of the Northern Super League (NSL), it was Week 9.

>

class="wp-block-paragraph">Three matches. Six goals. Three eerily identical score lines. For the first time this season, every match ended 1-1.

>

class="wp-block-paragraph">Somehow, every team found the back of the net, picked up a point and not a single club gained ground in the standings. With the playoff race tightening and every point carrying more weight, Week 9 delivered drama without providing any answers.

Halifax and Vancouver share spoils in coastal clash

class="wp-block-paragraph">The week opened at Wanderers Grounds where Halifax Tides and Vancouver Rise battled to a hard-earned draw in a match defined by disciplined defending and standout goalkeeping.

>

class="wp-block-paragraph">Vancouver controlled much of the first half, seeing more of the ball and generating the better opportunities. Halifax goalkeeper Rylee Foster-Inman stood tall, denying every attempt that came her way. At the other end, Morgan McAslan matched her save for save to keep the Tides off the scoresheet.

>

class="wp-block-paragraph">The breakthrough finally arrived shortly after halftime. Vancouver’s persistence paid off when Anaïs Oularbi scored her debut NSL goal, finishing confidently to give the Rise a deserved lead. For a moment, it looked as though Vancouver might finally turn its control into three points.

>

class="wp-block-paragraph">Halifax had other ideas. The Tides increased the pressure as the match wore on and found their equalizer through Julianne Vallerand, who rose up and powered a header into the net. It was a fitting reward for Halifax’s resilience and set up a frantic finish.

>

class="wp-block-paragraph">Both teams pushed for a winner in the closing stages but neither could find the decisive moment, leaving them to split the points in a contest that could have gone either way.

Six minutes of chaos, 84 minutes of stalemate

class="wp-block-paragraph">Sunday’s meeting between Ottawa Rapid FC and AFC Toronto exploded into life almost immediately.

>

class="wp-block-paragraph">Just three minutes after kickoff, DB Pridham gave Ottawa the dream start. The striker unleashed a powerful left-footed strike that found the corner of the net and sent TD Place into celebration.

>

class="wp-block-paragraph">The lead lasted only moments. Three minutes later, Lauren Rowe continued her red hot form by calmly finishing past the goalkeeper to restore parity. In the span of six minutes, the match had already produced all of its goals.

>

class="wp-block-paragraph">What followed was a tense battle between two teams desperate to gain an edge.

>

class="wp-block-paragraph">Toronto came closest to finding a winner. Sarah Stratigakis rattled the post, while Rowe repeatedly tested Ottawa’s back line in search of her second goal of the afternoon. Ottawa responded with chances of its own, creating dangerous moments whenever they transitioned forward.

>

class="wp-block-paragraph">As the match entered its final stages both goalkeepers managed to rise to the occasion. Key saves at both ends preserved the deadlock and ensured that neither side could pull away.

>

class="wp-block-paragraph">After an electric opening, the points were shared.

Calgary ends drought as Montréal responds

class="wp-block-paragraph">In Laval, Calgary Wild FC finally found the breakthrough it had been searching for.

>

class="wp-block-paragraph">The Wild entered the match looking to end a frustrating scoreless run and did exactly that when Mya Jones slipped a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Kahli Johnson. The forward made no mistake, scoring her first NSL goal and giving Calgary an early advantage.

>

class="wp-block-paragraph">The lead like every other match this week was short-lived. Montréal answered through Evelyn Badu, whose spectacular long-range strike flew into the far corner for her own first NSL goal. It was the type of moment capable of changing a match in an instant.

>

class="wp-block-paragraph">The second half largely belonged to the Roses. They controlled possession and repeatedly forced Calgary goalkeeper Katelin Talbert into action. Elyse Bennett remained a constant threat in the attacking third while Montréal continued to pile on pressure through a series of corners and sustained attacking sequences.

>

class="wp-block-paragraph">Calgary refused to break.

>

class="wp-block-paragraph">Talbert delivered several crucial saves and the Wild back line absorbed wave after wave of pressure to secure a valuable point on the road. Despite Montréal’s dominance after the break, neither side could find a second goal.

A league too close to call

class="wp-block-paragraph">Week 9 may not have produced a single winner but it reinforced just how competitive the NSL has become.

>

class="wp-block-paragraph">Vancouver showed they can dictate matches away from home. Halifax proved once again that they can fight back under pressure. Toronto’s attack continued to generate chances. Ottawa remained difficult to break down. Calgary finally found its scoring touch while Montréal demonstrated why it remains one of the league’s most dangerous attacking sides.

>

class="wp-block-paragraph">Most importantly, no team managed to create separation.

>

class="wp-block-paragraph">With every club taking a point and the standings remaining largely unchanged, the margin for error continues to shrink. As the season approaches its decisive stretch, every match feels bigger than the last.
