PGA Tour suspends Trey Mullinax for 6 months for violation of performance-enhancing substances policy

The PGA Tour suspended golfer Trey Mullinax for six months on Wednesday for violating its performance-enhancing substances policy.

>Mullinax, the Tour said, tested positive for a substance prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency. It’s unclear what that substance actually is, or when he tested positive. But, the league said that Mullinax has “cooperated fully with the Tour throughout the process and accepted his suspension.”

>He’ll be eligible to return to the Tour on January 16, 2027.

“I take full responsibility for what happened,” Mullinax said in a statement, in part. “At the end of the day, it is my responsibility to understand and follow the PGA Tour’s anti-doping policy and all of its rules and regulations. I failed to do that, and that is on me.”

>Mullinax did not reveal what he took to trigger the positive test, but said he used “a medication to treat a condition” that he was diagnosed with while in college.

“My lack of knowledge is not an excuse. It was my responsibility to know the rules before taking any medication and I failed to do so,” he said. “I want to be absolutely clear — I have never taken any substance with the intention of gaining a competitive advantage. Anyone who knows me knows how much I respect this game and the values it represents.

>“I accept the consequences of my actions and will use this experience as a lesson. Golf has given me so much, and I never want one mistake to define the respect I have for the game or for the people who support me.”

Mullinax has won once on the Tour in his career, back at the Barbasol Championship in 2022. He’s competed just twice on Tour this season, most recently at the Zurich Classic back in April, but has missed the cut in both starts. He’s currently at No. 544 in the Official World Golf Rankings, and No. 150 in the FedExCup Fall standings.

>While Mullinax’s suspension is coming near the end of the PGA Tour season, it will hurt him this fall and take away his ability to earn status for next season. The top 100 golfers in the FedExCup Fall race earn PGA Tour cards for next season, and the top 125 earn conditional status. Mullinax’s Major Medical Extension expired at the end of the FedExCup Fall slate last year.
