>As the 2026 MLB trade deadline approaches, it is very clear that the Philadelphia Phillies are going to be searching for a right-handed-hitting outfielder.
>Not only does this roster need another good righty slugger, but it needs outfield help as well. However, what if the Phillies instead explored an upgrade elsewhere on the roster, specifically, over Alec Bohm?
>ESPN's Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel named the Phillies as one of the "best fits" for $151 million San Francisco Giants infielder Matt Chapman. He would be a very fascinating fit, as he'd be a huge upgrade over Bohm this year and into the future.
Phillies linked to Matt Chapman trade as Alec Bohm upgrade"Matt Chapman, 3B, San Francisco Giants. Chance of being traded: 25%," Passan and McDaniel write. "Best fits: Cardinals, A's, Nationals, Brewers, Marlins, Phillies, Mets, Red Sox."
>For starters, a trade for Chapman isn't very realistic for any team this season. He's owned $100 million over the next four years after the 2026 season. That's a ton of money, and it would be hard for a team to willingly commit to for a 33-year-old infielder.
>But, from the Phillies' perspective, this would be an unquestioned upgrade over Bohm. While the cost would be very high financially, Chapman would be a much better hitter and fielder than Bohm.
Alec Bohm vs. Matt Chapman statistical comparisonHe's a five-time Gold Glove award winner, and this season he's posted 3.2 bWAR in 71 games with 68 hits, 35 runs scored, 17 doubles, one triple, seven homers, 39 RBIs, and a .261 batting average with a .762 OPS.
>Bohm hasn't won any Gold Glove award, and likely won't either. He's posted -0.5 bWAR in 69 games with 56 hits, 22 runs scored, nine doubles, no triples, nine homers, 38 RBIs, and a .223 batting average with a .643 OPS.

>Bohm got off to a terrible start this season, posting a .426 OPS with one homer through April. Chapman had one homer through April as well, but his .718 OPS was way better. But Chapman had a rough May, posting a .533 OPS compared to Bohm's .812 May OPS.
>With Bohm's .786 OPS in June, he's clearly turned things around. But Chapman has a 1.421 OPS this June, as he's been one of the best hitters in the league since the start of the month.
Final outlook of a Chapman tradeThe Phillies trading for Chapman would be very interesting, as they'd be taking a big risk on someone who's older (33 years old) and under contract for $100 million from 2027 through 2030.
>If Bohm were struggling more, then a trade might make more sense. But, as he's been thriving now, a deal for the Giants' star third baseman doesn't make a ton of sense for the Phillies, both financially and from a team-need perspective.
