Popular Boxing Podcaster Mocks Rumored Shakur Stevenson vs. Manny Pacquiao Fight: ‘It’s Embarrassing’

At 29 years old, there’s no question that the native of Newark, NJ, is at the peak of his accomplished career. After capturing championship titles at featherweight, super featherweight, and lightweight, Stevenson (27-0, 11 KOs) set his sights on a new weight class: 140 pounds.

>In January, Stevenson met Teofimo Lopez in a highly anticipated match for the WBO and The Ring junior welterweight titles. After 12 one-sided rounds, Stevenson cruised to a unanimous decision win to become the new WBO and The Ring junior welterweight champion. There are now plenty of high-magnitude fights to make, with the likes of Gervonta Davis, Raymond Muratalla, Garry Antuanne Russell, or Devin Haney.

>However, rumors around Stevenson’s next opponent come as a letdown, with indicators of a matchup against 2025 Hall of Fame inductee Manny Pacquiao. Dan Canobbio of Inside Boxing was not a fan of the potential matchup.

>“Shakur, I’m looking right into the camera,” he said. “If you fight 48-year-old Manny Pacquiao, it’s an absolute embarrassment. What are we doing? You are in your prime. You are a pound-for-pound great right now.”

He has been clear about his desire to capture another world title. When he does hang up the gloves, there is no doubt that he will leave behind a storied career. He is, after all, the only eight-division champion in the history of the sport.

>The native of the Philippines is nowhere near the fighter he was about two decades ago, when he took the boxing world by storm. With memorable battles against Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Oscar De La Hoya, and Miguel Cotto, among others. But at this point in his career, what would a win over Pacquiao bring to Stevenson’s resume?

>“Dude, there’s like three or four more options for you out there, right now,” said Canobbio. “No one is clamoring for you to fight Manny Pacquiao; it’s embarrassing. There’s nothing cool about beating Manny Pacquiao when he’s 48!”
