Ramathon runners offered heat advice ahead of race

Temperatures are expected to reach 23C (73F) in Derby for Sunday's Ramathon and RAM 5 Mile race [Jane Tomlinson's Run For All]Organisers of a half-marathon due to take place on Sunday have reminded runners that "no run is worth risking your health".

>Temperatures are expected to reach 23°C (73F) in Derby on the day of the Ramathon and RAM 5 Mile race, cooler than earlier in the week but still warm.

>Event organiser Jane Tomlinson's Run For All has advised the 2,800 runners to wear light, breathable clothing, along with a cap, sunglasses and long lasting suncream, and adjust expectations on the day by easing pace and effort.

>"We've taken proactive steps to enhance support, both on the course and within the event village, and we'll continue to monitor conditions closely right up to the event," a spokesperson said.

>The half-marathon begins at 09:15 BST and the five-mile event starts 15 minutes later from Cathedral Green.

Derby's Cathedral Road, St Peter's Street, London Road, Shardlow Road, A6 Pride Parkway, Riverside Road and Full Street will be closed until Sunday afternoon [Jane Tomlinson's Run For All]The 13.1-mile (21km) route passes the Florence Nightingale Monument, Elvaston Castle, Alvaston Park and Pride Park Stadium, before runners return to the city centre.

>This means Cathedral Road, St Peter's Street, London Road, Shardlow Road, A6 Pride Parkway, Riverside Road, Full Street and connecting roads will be closed on Sunday morning.

>Most roads will be reopened by 11:00 but roads towards the end of the route will remain closed until 13:00.

>Organisers expect to reopen Sowter Road and Full Street by 16:00.

>Runners can collect their race number from Derby Arena between 07:00 and 19:00 on Saturday or from the race office in Cathedral Green on the morning of the events.

Listen: RamathonAdditional hydration and energy stations have been added due to the hot weather, and are available approximately every three miles along the course.

>Organisers said keeping hydrated was "absolutely critical" and asked runners to put their empty bottles in the bins provided along the racetrack.

>There will also be a misting station and a sprinkler point on the Ramathon course to help runners stay comfortable.

>The route is relatively flat, with an elevation gain of 213ft (65m).

>Personnel will be on hand to give medical assistance at regular intervals on the course, with fixed first aid stations located near the water stations.

>There will also be a first aid unit and recovery area near the start and finish line and roaming first aiders around the event village.

>Organisers have urged runners to stop and alert the nearest marshal or member of staff if they begin to feel unwell at any point.

>They have raced in half-marathons around Europe in a year‑long charity challenge in aid of Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice and Cavell, a charity that supports nurses and midwifery staff.

>"I am a bit cautious because the heat can affect your ability to run," said Laplana.

>"We will slow down and make sure that Black Beauty and I stop at every water station - I'll make sure that I water the horse and water myself."
