SBN Reacts: Most Fun World Cup Fanbase poll results

One of the surprising and delightful things about this year’s tournament were the visiting fan bases coming to Mexico, USA, and Canada — not just from the various diasporas in North America, but visiting fans. These fans were welcomed to their little regions and seemed absolutely thrilled to be there, not just to watch their teams but to discover and learn about North American culture.

class="wp-block-paragraph">So we did a poll about that! And while fan bases like Haiti, Cabo Verde, and Rock Chalk Algeria didn’t quite make the cut, there were other groups of fans that really made waves (complimentary) on this tournament, from the Scot Tartan Army to random Norwegians rowing in unison. We wanted to find out which fans Carty Free fans vibed with and found the most fun.

class="wp-block-paragraph">Carty Free has, naturally, a sizable British readership, so it’s perhaps no surprise that fully half of y’all voted for Scotland. And for good reason — the Tartan Army were a delight. They literally drank Boston out of beer and had this weird thing about putting traffic cones on the heads of sculptures. They also took over a Red Sox game and seemed to have an incredible time, and also descended en masse on areas where they took to the streets and celebrated, only to then completely pick up after themselves, leaving the streets cleaner than when they arrived. It was also fun to watch Scots discover such treasured locations as Waffle House, and become bemused and delighted by the various parts of the United States culture they found themselves enmeshed in. Lovely people, the Scots.

class="wp-block-paragraph">Norway was the second highest vote-getter, and I was a little surprised. I thought Netherlands with their sea of orange kits and Hup-Hup-Holland dancing would pip them, but the appeal of mass pretend rowing in the stands and perhaps the Scandinavian good looks were too much to overcome. 77% of votes going to two options doesn’t leave much for the rest of the poll.

class="wp-block-paragraph">But there you have it. Unfortunately, all of these fan bases have now been eliminated and gone home, leaving Spain and Argentina, who have distinguished themselves on the pitch but not really through their fan bases. Oh well.
