The Pittsburgh Steelers are scheduled to wrap up mandatory minicamp on Friday and break for a month before the start of training camp. This round of offseason work carries a little extra weight with a new head coach and new system, in addition to multiple new faces on the roster. Here are some notes from this latest round of OTAs.
Changes changes everywhereThe Steelers are incorporating new offensive and defensive systems with brand new coaching staffs. The coaches are saying all the right things about how the players are integrating but it's the words of the players that matter most. In particular on defense, edge defender T.J. Watt sounds like a guy who is preparing for an expanded role to help get him out of his slump as a pass rusher.
It's clear Mike Tomlin isn't in charge anymoreFollowing up on the practice notes of a whole new system, new head coach Mike McCarthy also brings a new attitude to the team and approach to practice. Gone are the more informal drills and gut feelings and in is a more analytical and business-like approach that includes greater learning and a new approach to drills.
Offensive line moves working so farThe biggest positional move the Steelers made was to flip the entire right side of the offensive line to the left and then start to build the right side. So far, it seems that offensive tackle Troy Fautanu and guard Mason McCormick are talking to the switch perfectly while the right side continues to sort itself out.
Players looking for a shotSeveral players who didn't get a fair shot under former head coach Mike Tomlin are working hard to take advantage of the clean slate. This includes wide receiver Roman Wilson who is running out of time and finds himself in a positional battle with rookie Germie Bernard.
