In the days leading up to the 2026 U.S. Open, Bryson DeChambeau, as he often does, created a buzz with his equipment. Instead of one-length irons, irons with bulge and roll, or an especially unique putter, at Shinnecock Hills it was DeChambeau's new driver. Two drivers, actually, made as prototypes by TaylorMade.

>The 2020 and 2023 U.S. Open winner practiced and tested earlier this week with a pair of TaylorMade Qi4D 200+ drivers that were added to the USGA's Conforming Driver Head list on Monday, making them legal for play. TaylorMade and DeChambeau were not forthcoming with many details, but on Thursday evening TaylorMade released the statement below.

>

>"Our pursuit to make the best performing drivers in the world, even for players with extreme speed, is ever present. Across the game, players are getting stronger, more athletic, and generating significantly more clubhead and ball speed than ever before.

>The foundation laid with the speed of our Qi4D drivers has allowed us to push further than ever before. The Qi4D 200+ Proto was developed as a prototype—a concept car, in many ways—to explore new ideas in aerodynamics, durability and performance created specifically for the high-speed player of today.

>The carbon face on the Qi4D 200+ Proto is really where the story gets interesting. At those speeds, the shape of the face needs to be different. It must be uniquely engineered to maximize speed, start direction and consistency on off-center shots, in a way that complements someone at 200 MPH+. Carbon lets us custom form that face with an incredible level of precision. We can do things, and hold tolerances, that you simply can't achieve any other way.

>Bryson DeChambeau wanted a driver that could handle ball speeds north of 200 MPH and address the unique performance demands that come with swinging at the speed necessary to generate those numbers. We were able to meet him there by utilizing the backbone of Qi4D." - Brian Bazzel, vice president of product creation at TaylorMade Golf.

>

>That, again, does not tell us much. TaylorMade has used layers of carbon fiber instead of titanium in its driver faces for several years, and we know that DeChambeau has been one of the fastest swingers in professional golf for years, too. The "200" in the name very likely refers to the quest for 200 mph ball speed.

>On the USGA Conforming Driver listing, both heads are listed as having 7 degrees of loft. Both are marked “PROTO” and “200+,” both have carbon face markings, a TaylorMade T-logo crown alignment mark and hosel orientation indicators. The listing also notes Speed Pocket markings on the sole, along with weight-port markings.

>Version 2 has two 10-gram weights positioned in the front heel and toe areas of the sole, which should push the center of gravity more forward. Version 1 has those same two front weights, plus a third weight in the back of the head.
