The Open Championship Friday live updates, leaderboard: Bryson DeChambeau, others look to catch up to Jackson Suber

Jackson Suber is leading the British Open, just like everybody expected.

>The 26-year-old, who has yet to win on the PGA Tour and hadn't been to Europe before this week, surprised everyone when he posted a 5-under 65 on Thursday to kick off the final major championship of the season. That was enough to give him a one-shot lead over the field overnight at Royal Birkdale.

>We should learn pretty quickly if Suber is able to hang on. He's off in the early wave on Friday, and there is a big group behind him. Sungjae Im and Daniel Brown each got to 4-under, and Bryson DeChambeau — yes, really — leads the massive group at 3-under.

>DeChambeau hasn't made a cut yet at a major in 2026, and the LIV Golf star hadn't found a way to post a single round under par at a major before Thursday. He's in a great position to make the weekend, though we'll see how it goes in the second round.

>Top-ranked Scottie Scheffler isn't out of it yet, either. He's at 2-under, and will go off late on Friday alongside DeChambeau. It's Rory McIlroy, though, who needs a big second round. McIlroy carded a 2-over 72 on Thursday to drop well out of contention. If he's not careful, he'll be the one headed home early.

>We'll see how things play out over the next few hours. And with great weather ahead, it should be a very entertaining afternoon.
