CLEVELAND, OHIO - SEPTEMBER 27: Jalen Coker #18 of the Carolina Panthers walks off the field prior to the game against the Cleveland Browns at Huntington Bank Field on September 27, 2026 in Cleveland, Ohio. Coaching decisions are logical and devastating. Complementary football means offense, defense, and special teams work together to smother any possibility of competition. Sometimes in the NFL, the exact opposite of that happens. Sometimes, you see both types of performances in back-to-back weeks. Welcome to your 2026 Carolina Panthers.
class="wp-block-paragraph">You can place blame for yesterday’s loss squarely on the shoulders of the coaches, of Bryce Young, and of most everybody else on the Panthers. The defense started the game unable to tackle and ended it unable to cover. The offense could get no push in the running game while the coaches stuck to running off the right side for no to limited game. The officials were hugely inconsistent and frequently impactful. Oh, yeah, and right now we’re waiting on injury updates for Damien Lewis, Jalen Coker, Jaycee Horn, and Mike Jackson. We’ll take this in parts and try to find some hope in there somewhere.
The injury bug is biting hardThis is the real kicker for this team. Injuries happen to every team, but threatening to remove LG1, WR2, CB1, and CB2, from a team already missing LT1, RT1, however you would designate Brady Christensen, RB2, RB3, S1, ILB1, OLB2, and DT2 is beyond the pale. That is Lewis, Coker, Horn, Jackson, Ikem Ekwonu, Taylor Moton, the aforementioned Christensen, Jonathon Brooks, Trevor Ettiene, Nick Scott, Devin Lloyd, Nic Scourton, and Tershawn Wharton for those of you following along at home. Each of those players is out for varying lengths of time, with only Scourton definitively out for the season.
class="wp-block-paragraph">It is only Week 3 and ten projected or actual starters have missed significant time, including the same time for much of the last half of the game yesterday. Tha’s effectively half of the team’s best talent, plus a handful of their best depth, that was unavailable to contest the end of the Browns game.
class="wp-block-paragraph">We will eagerly await news this week on Horn, Jackson, Lewis, and Coker before judging just how devastating a loss Week 3 really was.
Who is Bryce Young?Young seems poised to be a quarterback who can succeed when everything is going well. We have seen too much good football from him to say he can’t play at all. As the most pressured quarterback in the league, his strengths and weaknesses have so far been laid bare and are his to refute in the coming weeks. He is good against zone coverage and pretty awful against man. That gets magnified when under pressure. He can be accurate pushing the ball downfield when he has time. He can be wildly erratic and throw incredibly weak passes when forced to work off platform.
class="wp-block-paragraph">The good news is that few teams have the personnel to do man blitzes or get pressure with just four and hold up against the likes of Tetairoa McMillan and, I guess, Brycen Tremayne and Darren Waller. Young isn’t fully “cooked” after one bad game just as he wasn’t “Him” after two reasonably good ones. As always, these things require nuance.
What happened on fourth down? The Panthers clearly thought they had a winning gameplan against the Browns and that gave them the confidence to be reckless. They ended the day 0-3 on fourth down. Two of those failed conversions gave the Browns excellent field position that they managed to turn into ten points.
class="wp-block-paragraph">Both teams struggled on the field. The decision to be that aggressive in the first half was a coaching error that gave the Browns an unearned leg up and, more than anything, led to yesterday’s loss.
What’s next? The team I saw yesterday loses next Sunday to the Detroit Lions before retreating to lick their many, many wounds during their early bye week. Of course, they’ve surprised us before.
class="wp-block-paragraph">My current hope for the Panthers is that they can continue to build on Young’s strengths this season, continue to get healthier instead of more injured, and return to playing some entertaining football.
class="wp-block-paragraph">Yes, injuries will mount as the season continues, but the Panthers also have the opportunity to return a lot of offensive lineman across the season with relatively fresh legs. That could improve the protection that Young enjoys as the season goes on and lead to more games like we saw at the opening of the season.
class="wp-block-paragraph">It won’t be every game. Young may not prove to be the answer long term given his frequently limited play, but we may yet have some fun. The team could even still turn out to be good. There is too much football left to play and too many injuries left to clear up to condemn the season after three games. Plus, you can’t condemn a team that is once again leading its division with a losing record.
class="wp-block-paragraph">That’s right ladies and gentlemen, your 1-2 Carolina Panthers are still in sole possession of first place in the NFC South for at least another week. Huzzah.
