Apparently there was a reason that the numbers said this fly ball from Royals superstar Bobby Witt Jr. only had a 99% catch probability.
"So you're telling me there's a chance," the baseball said to Yankees centerfielder Trent Grisham.
Yep, the 1% happened on Friday night at Yankee Stadium.
Grisham went back on a lofted fly, settled under it, and then... didn't catch it.
It was, more or less, a routine out. Instead, it looked like this:

At times in his career, Grisham has been regarded as a very good fielder. This play was clearly anything but that.
You can see in the broadcast video above that Yankees pitcher Cam Schlittler looks quite confused. It's a look that says, "I really got Bobby Witt out except you somehow dropped the ball?"
The play didn't cost the Yankees the game. They went on to win, 4-2.
But it's clearly a lowlight in what has been a relatively slow start to the season for Grisham. Most of his underlying hitting stats are good, but his numbers haven't reflected it, aside from two homers in a game earlier this week.
The least Grisham could do is catch some relatively routine opportunities in the outfield. Not this time, though.
