Mandatory Credit: David Gonzales-Imagn ImagesThe Indian Fever entered Saturday night’s nationally televised showdown against the Portland Fire as 12-point favorites, as the team seemed poised for a bounce-back win after Thursday night’s loss to the Golden State Valkyries. Instead, the Fever were handed an embarrassing 100-84 blowout loss as Clark had one of the worst games of her career.
>Clark finished the game with just 6 points and 6 assists, shooting 1 for 7 from the field, tying the second-worst scoring performance of her entire WNBA career. However, you could argue that her holistic performance on Saturday night was worse than any previous game she’s ever played at the professional level.
>While the struggles were evident on offense, Clark’s biggest struggles were on the defensive side of the ball, where she was an absolute liability from start to finish and couldn’t even remain on the court for the Fever.
Caitlin Clark ExposedClark is one of the most prolific scorers in the league, but she has never been a strong defender. She struggled once again on Saturday night as the Fire seemed to go right after her, and it worked.
>Not only did Clark have a problem defending Portland guard Carla Weite, who finished the game with 18 points and 12 assists, but she also had problems even staying on the court without fouling. Clark spent a significant portion of the game in foul trouble, which meant she spent a significant portion of the game on the bench.
>Clark entered halftime with three fouls and picked up her fourth just two minutes into the third quarter. As a result, head coach Stephanie White put Clark on the bench for most of the quarter. Clark checked back into the game at the 2-minute mark in the third quarter, but she picked up her fifth foul less than two minutes later and was immediately taken back out of the lineup. She remained on the bench until midway through the fourth quarter, when the game was already out of reach.
>Quite simply, the Fire exposed Clark for her poor defense. Not only were they able to attack her at will on the perimeter, but they were able to get her in foul trouble and keep her off the court, preventing her from getting in a rhythm on offense. It’s a similar strategy that the Golden State Valkyries utilized on Thursday night.
‘Huge liability’It did not take long for fans on social media to pick up on what was happening and offer some scathing criticism of Clark and the Fever.
>“CaitlinClark is huge liability on defense, getting exposed tonight,” a fan wrote in a post on X.
>“This will be every team’s strategy now, copying Valks… Go after CaitlinClark on offense; she is mid-Defense and gets fouls, and then she sits for half the game, can’t get into a rhythm,” another fan wrote.
>“Opponents are absolutely punishing Caitlin Clark for her piss poor defense. They should continue to and if she doesn’t improve then we know she’s not the player they are gaslighting us to believe she is,” someone else added.
>“Caitlin Clark legit gets picked on while playing defense. Portland should just keep attacking her,” another fan added.
>“Caitlindefense is just terrible at times.. teams now have just said we are gonna hunt and attack her over and over…” someone else said.
>“Every time Carla Leite sees CaitlinClark tryna guard her she just sees a victim. A victim. Clark commits her 5th foul tryna guard Leite before the 4th quarter even starts,” another fan wrote.
>Clark will have a chance to bounce back on Thursday night when the Fever hosts Angel Reese and the Atlanta Dream.
