After losing the first two games, the Kings’ hopes for a successful season are looking slim. After a very disappointing defeat in Los Angeles, Sacramento looked for a chance to prove itself at least once in front of home fans. Unfortunately, despite a better effort against the Portland Trail Blazers, the Kings lost 128-120 in their opening home game. However, there were some positives, especially from rookie Darius Acuff Jr., but several issues could still derail Sacramento’s season.

After missing the opening game, when Sacramento fell to the Clippers, Acuff proved once again what he can do as a promising player for the Kings. Despite shooting 10-of-26 against the Blazers, Acuff’s aggressiveness and offensive ability make him an exciting prospect for Sacramento; he can get his shots off and is reliable.

>Acuff can create his own shot, attack the paint, and make difficult jumpers. He needs to work on his shot selection and decision-making, and as time passes, many of the shots he’s missing now will drop in because he has the confidence and ability to do so. This is what the Kings desperately need from a point guard right now: someone who can generate offense when possessions stall, and that’s precisely what Acuff does.

Sacramento Kings’ Margin for Error Is Extremely SlimThe biggest problem with Sacramento’s first two games is that the Kings have no margin for error right now. The first game was a loss to the Clippers in Los Angeles, and it hurt because Sacramento never scored enough to gain any control of the game. The home opener against Portland on Friday night was a better contest for the Kings in the first half because they went into halftime with a 64-59 lead over the Blazers. But it was all over for Sacramento in the third quarter after Portland scored 15 straight points to start the period, turning a five-point deficit into a 10-point lead.

>Portland finished the quarter with 44 points to put Sacramento away. Despite the Kings’ best efforts to mount a comeback, Sacramento couldn’t recover from its defensive struggles and inability to score. That kind of scoring run will make or break the Kings as a competitive, winning team. Sacramento has to be able to maintain a lead when they can get one.

Depth, Injuries, and the Supporting CastAnother question is whether the team has enough reliable depth to handle the grind of 82 games. Malik Monk is still recovering, and his return against the Blazers was understandably shaky, as he scored 0 points in 12 minutes. Malik’s ability to create his offense and spark off the bench would be crucial whenever the starters need rest or the offense stalls.

>However, until Monk regains his rhythm, Sacramento will have to rely on young, inexperienced players who can sometimes bring energy and a few baskets. Still, consistency is unlikely as the team adjusts to the league. Without Ben Simmons as an extra weapon, the team is less versatile on the court in passing, defense, height, and playmaking. Sacramento doesn’t need all its bench players to become major contributors, but it does need a reliable rotation and better defense.

The Last WordIn the end, while the Kings’ 0-2 record is disappointing, it is still too early in the season to make any final determinations. The loss to the Clippers was telling, but Sacramento has already shown it has enough offensive firepower to play at a high level when its top performers are on point, as the game against the Portland Trail Blazers showed.

>While Acuff’s 33 points are promising, Domantas Sabonis proved he is worth his weight in gold by dropping 27 points, 19 rebounds, and 10 assists against the Trail Blazers. Nonetheless, individual performances will mean little if Sacramento keeps losing games because of poor defense and sloppy play overall. With the addition of Monk and more bench time for the rest of the roster, Sacramento needs to learn how to stay intense for four quarters. While there are definitely reasons to feel positive, with Acuff’s talent being one of them, Sacramento has already proven that talent alone won’t be enough.
