Getting back on track: In Jonathan Cannon’s past three starts, he has only allowed three runs in 18 innings. | Laura Wolff/Charlotte Knights Charlotte Knights 4, Durham Bulls 1 (7 innings, Game 1) The Knights (59-50) got out to a strong start in the doubleheader against Durham (50-58).

class="wp-block-paragraph">In the bottom of the second, Korey Lee doubled with one out, and he advanced to third on a ground out by Tim Elko. That set the stage for Mario Camilletti, who drove in the game’s first run with a single. A throwing error on a pickoff attempt allowed Camilletti to advance to second, and Dru Baker drove him in with a clutch double.

class="wp-block-paragraph">In the third, Junior Pérez singled, and with two outs, Ryan Galanie crushed his 19th homer of the season (18th with the Knights) to double Charlotte’s lead. With this blast, Galanie built on his momentum after being our White Sox Minor League Player of the Week.

class="wp-block-paragraph">Meanwhile, Knights starter Jonathan Cannon picked up his third consecutive start of exactly six innings and exactly one run allowed. Cannon, 26, has been much more effective lately, and his performance made it so that this game was not stressful down the stretch. Hagen Smith pitched a scoreless seventh inning to pick up the save.

Durham Bulls 7, Charlotte Knights 1 (7 innings, Game 2) The nightcap of the doubleheader did not go as well for the Knights (59-51), who settled for a split against the Bulls (51-58).

class="wp-block-paragraph">Knights starter Peyton Pallette, 25, allowed two runs on three hits in two innings. As it turned out, those two runs would be enough for the Bulls in this game. The bullpen was no better, allowing five runs in five innings, as the Knights failed to keep this game close.

class="wp-block-paragraph">The Knights only scored one run, and that was in the bottom of the fourth. During that inning, Junior Pérez hit a leadoff single, he stole second, and he advanced to third on a throwing error. From there, Michael Turner drove Perez in with a ground out. However, that run was not nearly enough.

Birmingham Barons 8, Rocket City Trash Pandas 4 The Barons (42-62) put a pair of big innings together en route to a victory in Rocket City against the Trash Pandas (53-50).

class="wp-block-paragraph">Right-handed pitcher Drew Thorpe, 25, had a decent start, as he allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits in four innings. Rocket City picked up an earned run against Thorpe in the first and an unearned run against him in the second to take a 2-0 lead.

class="wp-block-paragraph">Birmingham’s offense was quiet after three innings, but that changed in a big way in the fourth, when Anthony DePino led off with a double. Colby Shelton walked, and Ryan Burrowes loaded the bases with a single. From there, James Taussig was hit by a pitch to force in Birmingham’s first run. With one out, José Colmenares hit into a productive force out that tied the game, and Dylan Campbell hit a timely double to drive in a pair. That double put the Barons ahead by a score of 4-2, and Birmingham led for the rest of the game. After Caleb Bonemer walked, Alec Briley reached on an error, and the five-run inning was complete.

class="wp-block-paragraph">The Barons picked up three more runs in the seventh to put the game away. Briley led off with a double, and although DePino struck out, Shelton and Burrowes drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. After back-to-back RBI singles by Taussig and Magill, the lead grew to 8-2. The Trash Pandas scored a pair in the latter portion of the game, but it was too little, too late.

Winston-Salem Dash 7, Asheville Tourists 4 The Dash (57-47) propelled themselves to a victory over Asheville (34-69) with a five-run third inning.

class="wp-block-paragraph">After a scoreless first inning, the teams traded runs in the second. During the top of the second, the Tourists hit three straight singles to score the only earned run against Jake Curtis in his five innings. However, Roch Cholowsky collected his first hit, his first extra-base hit, and his first RBI in the bottom half to tie the game. With runners on first and second with one out, the No. 1 overall pick doubled to drive in Jackson Appel, who had walked earlier in the inning. Well done to Cholowsky, who will surely have many more moments like that.

class="wp-block-paragraph">With the score still 1-1 in the bottom of the third, George Wolkow singled, Jeral Perez walked, and Kyle Lodise walked to load the bases. From there, Derek Cerda singled to drive in Winston-Salem’s second run and put the Dash ahead. The Dash led from that point forward, but they were not done. Kaleb Freeman grounded into a force out that allowed Perez to score to make it 3-1. Jackson Appel walked to load the bases, and Nick McLain walked to force in a run. Cholowsky and Mogollón reached on back-to-back errors, and just like that, it was 6-1. The Dash picked up their seventh and final run in the fourth on an RBI single by Freeman.

Kannapolis Cannon Ballers 10, Charleston RiverDogs 4 The Cannon Ballers (54-50) ran away against the RiverDogs (58-46) with a pair of big innings in Charleston.

class="wp-block-paragraph">Kannapolis picked up the first run of the game in the top of the first, when Billy Carlson singled, and Steven Lancia doubled to drive Carlson in. The RiverDogs got that run back in the bottom of the second on a productive ground out. However, in the third and fourth innings, the Cannon Ballers exploded.

class="wp-block-paragraph">Carlson picked up another hit to lead off the third, he advanced to second on a passed ball, and he scored on a double by Lancia. Braden Holcomb doubled to drive in Lancia, and with the bases loaded, Jaden Fauske walked to force in another run.

class="wp-block-paragraph">There was no stopping the Cannon Ballers in the fourth. Entering that inning, the score was still 4-1, but Carlson, who reached base safely in all six of his plate appearances, drew a leadoff walk. Lancia followed with a single, and although Grayson Fitzwater struck out, Alexander Albertus walked to load the bases. With an RBI opportunity, Holcomb delivered with a two-run double, and Clay Burdette tripled to drive in a pair. After singles by Crew McChesney and Matthew Boughton, Carlson delivered again with a two-run single. Just like that, the score was 10-1, and the outcome was not in doubt at any point after the fourth.
