An MLB expert has an interesting trade idea that would see the New York Yankees land a premium reliever from the San Diego Padres. But it’s not a rumored trade for All-Star Mason Miller.
class="wp-block-paragraph">Heading into the weekend, the Yankees own the second-best record in the American League. Unfortunately for New York, they are in the same division as the club with the top record in the AL, the Tampa Bay Rays. So the team is sure to be in a serious fight just to win the division this summer.
class="wp-block-paragraph">To ensure they win the AL East, the Yankees are expected to shop the trade market before Aug. 3, and more impact arms for the bullpen will be a top priority. It is why the Padres All-Star has been linked to New York in recent days, since San Diego is expected to become sellers soon. However, the cost for the 27-year-old star under team control for several more seasons will be high.
Should the NY Yankees target trades for Adrian Morejon and Jeremiah Estrada

That is why ESPN stats expert Paul Hembo offered up a different trade idea on a new edition of the BBTN podcast. The numbers guru notes that while the Padres are a bottom-rung team in several categories, they have an outstanding back end of the bullpen. And it’s why the Yankees should instead target Adrian Morejon and Jeremiah Estrada.
class="wp-block-paragraph">Morejon, 27, is having a rock-solid season. Posting a 3.46 ERA, a 1.12 WHIP (fourth best on the team), and has 59 strikeouts in 52.0 innings and just 13 walks. Estrada, also 27, has a 3.48 ERA with a 1.11 WHIP (third best for San Diego) and 23 Ks in 20.2 innings. Either would come at a far lower price for the Yanks and could make an impact during the second half and playoffs.
class="wp-block-paragraph">So what could a potential deal cost New York? “Maybe they float a Will Warren. Maybe they float Jasson Dominguez in a way in which both of these teams can achieve their goals by basically flipping strengths,” Hembo suggested.
class="wp-block-paragraph">Moving Warren or Dominguez would hurt the Yankees’ depth, but both are expendable. They would appeal to the Padres because they are two players in their 20s (Warren is 27 and Dominguez is 23) who are under arbitration control for two more seasons and can make a larger impact than a reliever. Warren can be a rock-solid back end of the rotation, or better, starter for cheap. While many think Dominguez, the one-time top prospect in the Yankees system, has all the skills to be a 25-home run and 85 RBI player if given a regular starting role.
