WNBA posts video appearing to show Paige Bueckers and Angel Reese betting on their game in clear violation of league rules

The WNBA posted a video of Paige Bueckers and Angel Reese from All-Star weekend appearing to place a $400 bet between the two of them over which team would win before their contest on Wednesday night.

>That video, however, didn’t remain up for long.

>The post, which had a caption that was trying to be playful about the whole thing, was quickly deleted. Wagering on games, of course, is strictly prohibited.

>The WNBA’s official X account posted a video on Wednesday that showed Reese and Bueckers making the wager at All-Star weekend in Chicago. The two appeared to make a $400 wager on the result of Wednesday night’s game between their two teams. Reese and the Atlanta Dream picked up the win over Bueckers and the Dallas Wings, 82-81.

But that post disappeared soon after it went live, likely when the league realized it was promoting something that is explicitly against the rules.

“Any player found by the Commissioner after a hearing to have been guilty of wagering (directly or indirectly), or of offering or attempting to wager, money or anything of value on the outcome, score, or any other aspect of any WNBA Competition shall, in the sole discretion of the Commissioner, be subject to a fine, suspension, and/or dismissal and disqualification from any further association with the WNBA,” section 5(c) of the CBA states.

While lighthearted, it’s hard to view the actions in the video posted by the league as something that is not in clear violation of that rule.

>Reese had 22 points and 12 rebounds in the Dream’s one-point win on Wednesday night in Texas. She’s averaged 15.4 points and 11.5 rebounds per game so far this season while helping the Dream to a 17-10 record. Bueckers had 16 points and six assists in the loss for Dallas, which now holds an 18-10 record.

>Now, it’s unclear what is actually going to come from this. It’s not like Bueckers or Reese were wagering against their own teams, placing bets through a sportsbook, or manipulating lines here. It appeared to be a simple, friendly wager between young stars in the league. And had the WNBA not posted the video about the wager in the first place, it’s likely that it would have stayed quiet.

>But the error, which was entirely self-inflicted, is sure to lead to some sort of repercussions in the coming days.
