David Ornstein: Newcastle United have £46m bid rejected for top transfer targetNewcastle United See Lucas Bergvall Bid Rejected by Tottenham

style="text-align: justify;">Newcastle United have made their move for Lucas Bergvall, and Tottenham have shut the door, for now. According to David Ornstein for The Athletic, Spurs have rejected an offer worth around £46million for the 20-year-old midfielder, with the report stating the bid “exceeded the approaches made by Nottingham Forest to date”.

>

style="text-align: justify;">That matters, because it tells you two things straight away. First, Newcastle are serious. Second, Tottenham still think there is more value in the player, whether that means keeping him or extracting a bigger fee. The key line is simple, “all attempts to sign the 20-year-old so far, including higher proposals, have been rejected by Spurs”, though “a sale would be considered if the figures reach a level they deem suitable.” That is not a no, it is a price-setting exercise.

Bergvall Wants A Move

style="text-align: justify;">Bergvall’s own position sharpens the story. He “has informed the club of his preference to seek an opportunity elsewhere this summer”, despite being under contract until June 2031. Long contract, limited leverage, familiar modern situation. If the player wants out, the selling club can still dictate terms, especially when there is more than one interested buyer.

style="text-align: justify;">Newcastle’s need is obvious. They sold Sandro Tonali to Spurs earlier in the window and also “missed out on the signing of Switzerland international Johan Manzambi, who moved to Aston Villa instead.” Bergvall fits the profile, young, technical, upward curve, resale value. He has made 78 appearances for Spurs since arriving in a £8.5m deal from Djurgarden in 2024, and last season he played 33 times, with one goal and five assists.

>

style="text-align: justify;">Tottenham, meanwhile, have already strengthened in midfield through Mateus Fernandes and Tonali. That usually creates room for movement, but only at the seller’s number, not the buyer’s. Newcastle have been told exactly where they stand.

Our View

style="text-align: justify;">From a Newcastle perspective, this one is intriguing because it looks like the club are trying to be aggressive without being reckless. Bergvall is young, clearly talented, and the fact he wants a new opportunity this summer changes the dynamic. If that is genuine, then Newcastle should keep pushing, but only to a point.

>

style="text-align: justify;">£46million is already serious money for a player with one goal and five assists last season, especially one coming off an ankle issue in January. Talent is there, no doubt, but there is a difference between paying for upside and overpaying because the selling club senses desperation. Tottenham have spent heavily, so naturally they are in no rush. They can posture. Newcastle do not need to play along forever.

>

style="text-align: justify;">The encouraging part is that the recruitment team appear to have a clear midfield plan after losing Tonali and missing out on Manzambi. Bergvall feels like a player who could grow quickly in the right setup, and at 20 there is obvious long-term value. Supporters will like that logic.

>

style="text-align: justify;">Still, if Spurs want silly money, walk away. Simple as that. Newcastle have to be smarter than that in this market. Bergvall is interesting, maybe very interesting, but he is not the only midfielder in Europe. If the fee climbs too far beyond £46million, the sensible move is to test Tottenham one more time, then move on fast.
