DeAndre Hopkins joins Georgia Tech's coaching staff before opener

Colorado football opens the 2026 season on the road against Georgia Tech, and the Yellow Jackets will have some NFL royalty on the sideline come kickoff Sept. 3.

>Former NFL star DeAndre Hopkins has joined Georgia Tech's coaching staff as assistant wide receivers coach, per Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports and later announced by the team. Zenitz reports that Hopkins was in Atlanta this week meeting with the team. Hopkins has a strong relationship with Yellow Jackets OC George Godsey.

>Colorado is no stranger to NFL stars joining its coaching staff. Deion Sanders has hired several former players, including Warren Sapp and Marshall Faulk. Now the Buffs will have to go up against a wide receiver room that will have been coached by one of the best receivers of his generation.

— Georgia Tech Football (@GeorgiaTechFB) July 31, 2026Hopkins is a five-time All-Pro and caught 1,006 passes for 13,295 yards and 85 touchdowns in 13 NFL seasons with the Houston Texans (2013-19), Arizona Cardinals (2020-22), Tennessee Titans (2023-24), Kansas City Chiefs (2024) and Baltimore Ravens (2025). He is the Texans' all-time leader in single-season receptions and touchdown receptions.

>The most interesting part of Hopkins' addition is that Godsey was the Texans' offensive coordinator from 2015-16 and was on the Ravens staff last year as tight ends coach when Hopkins was with Baltimore. Hopkins' knowledge of the Georgia Tech offense is the biggest reason why head coach Brent Key hired him.

>"DeAndre is one of the greatest receivers of all-time, but his value to our program goes far beyond the that," Key said in the school's press release. "He has an exceptional knowledge of what we’re doing on offense due his long relationship with (offensive coordinator) George Godsey and strong familiarity with the ACC."
