CLEVELAND — Diamondbacks right-handed pitcher Michael Soroka (glute strain) continued to move toward a return from the 15-day injured list as his team prepared to open a three-game series Friday, July 31, against the Guardians at Progressive Field.

>Soroka faced 12 hitters and got eight strikeouts in a rehab game on Thursday, July 30. His next outing will be Tuesday, Aug. 4, at Triple-A Reno. Manager Torey Lovullo said the plan is for Soroka to work three innings and throw right around 50 pitches.

>Right-hander Zac Gallen will need more imaging on his right elbow before the next step in his recovery, but Lovullo said Gallen is throwing out to 120 feet and feels good. Right-hander Corbin Burnes (elbow surgery recovery) is moving toward flat-ground throwing and right-hander Ryne Nelson (right elbow) is throwing from 90 to 100 feet.

>Outfielder Jordan Lawlar (right hamstring strain) is ramping up his work with five at-bats in his last rehab game. Right-handed pitcher Jordan Martinez is closer to a return from elbow surgery. He will pitch in a game at Class A Visalia on Aug. 4.

>Outfielder Tommy Troy (sprained knee joint) is hitting off a tee and still working on full range of motion, as is outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (right adductor strain).

Lovullo spends day off in BuffaloLovullo and his wife, Kristen, took the off day to spend time in Buffalo, New York, with her family, driving from Pittsburgh, where the Diamondbacks last played to upstate New York and then down to Cleveland in time for the opening game.

>"That's part of it. You've got to get away on off days, create a little bit of balance," Lovullo said. "I talk to these (Diamondbacks) players about it all the time."

>Some of the team's coaches took time to visit the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.

>Lovullo played for the Guardians, then the Indians, in 1998, and joined the organization in 2001 in a coaching capacity, starting his path toward becoming a big-league manager.

>"I have very fond memories of this particular stadium (Progressive Field), this organization. They were so good to me," Lovullo said. "They raised me, basically. ... They do it right here; they've done it right here for a long time."

>At Progressive Field: Bratt gave up five runs and walked five in Washington over the weekend, though a bright spot was that he managed to get through five innings for the first time in his career. … Bratt labored through the third inning of that start, giving up four hits and walking three while needing 29 pitches. … Bibee gave up three runs in six innings against the Rays in his most recent start. … He has been pitching well since the start of June, logging a 3.05 ERA during a nine-start stretch. … He has faced the Diamondbacks twice in his career, most recently last season, when he gave up four runs in 5 2/3 innings.
