Elkhart golfers lead area squads at state finals

The Elkhart High School boys golf team turned in the top first-round showing among a quartet of area teams Tuesday.
>Coach Todd King's Lions sit in 10th place after the opening day of the IHSAA State Finals at the Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel Tuesday.
>Elkhart shot a team total of 316.
>Center Grove paced the 18-team field with a three-over par total of 291. Center Grove finished in seventh place in the state finals a year ago. Defending state champion Westfield was second at 295 with Castle third at 297.

>The trio of Trinity Academy of South Bend, Plymouth and South Bend Saint Joseph sit in 12th, 14th and a tie for 15th place respectively in the team standings after 18 holes.
>Elkhart, which shot 310 to place second in the Lake Central Regional held at Sandy Pines last week, was led by Brenden Divido. The freshman shot a three-over par round of 75 in the first round.
>Sophomore Ben Divido carded a 77 with sophomore Ryan Molyneaux coming in with a 79 for the Lions. Junior Cameron Miller shot an 85 and senior Nathan Windy a 90.
>Trinity Academy shot 321 on Tuesday after winning the Lake Central Regional crown with a 299. Sophomore John Paul Bernady led the Titans with a round of 77. Junior Dane Sweikar shot a 78, with freshman Gabe Palmer at 82, freshman Cole Sweikar at 86 and junior Nathan Palmer at 83.
>Nathan Palmer was the regional medalist with a round of 68 at Sandy Pines.
>Junior Ben Nguyen led the way for the Pilgrims with a 78. Plymouth won the Warsaw Regional team title with a 302.
>Senior Dan Nguyen fired an 80 and junior Bryce Busse an 81 for Plymouth. Junior Mac Holm shot an 87 and senior Caleb Harland a 91 for the Pilgrims.
>
>Senior Tate Guyton shot a five-over par round of 77 to lead the St. Joe Huskies, who were third in the Lake Central Regional.
>Senior Joe Kloska shot a 78, junior Zach Matthys an 80 and senior Max Germann and junior Trevor Bowles each had a 92 for the Huskies.
>St. Joe finished 12th and Elkhart 13th at the State Finals in 2025.
>The trio of sophomore Drew Carlson of Center Grove, freshman Alexander Cook of Castle and senior Hudson Kutchma of Westfield lead the individual leaderboard. All shot rounds of 68 Tuesday.
>The tourney continues with the final round Wednesday.
